My iphone has been driving me crazy since day one.

bald1 suggested i verify my SMTP server settings and i can’t find it where i would normally look for it.

SOME mails never reach destination, some do.

The hotmail account was set up automatically when i bought the phone but i don’t think it uses
smtp-mail.outlook.com as address.

It’s getting to the point where i wish 1000 violent deaths to this little device. Most definitely getting old (myself) too fast.

Nicky,
Can't help you with an iPhone as I never have owned one, although solutions appear to be among these:
https://search.brave.com/searc...tings&source=desktop .

Android is simple with the Gmail email application. Simply go to settings within the app.
And it was ensigmatic who suggested sanity checking the settings. I quoted him. Smile

The SMTP setting is under Settings -> Mail -> Accounts -> [click the account] -> [click the account name] -> Outgoing Mail Server

What Mark said ^^^^^, except "Primary," rather than "Outgoing."

At least on my iPhone with the latest iOS update.

Yes, you have to click Outgoing and the next screen will show the Primary server up top. Could be because I have multiple accounts that it’s on the next page.

There is exactly where i am looking for it BUT clicking on the account does not show any servers setting.

Running 16.3.1.
Will update first then look for the settings once again.

Alternative is to delete the account and set it up again but am afraid i might lose Contacts in the process.

Been using the same Hotmail account since 1995. Hate the Apple ecosystem with passion.
Can understand MS changing the SMTP name but having the old one working erratically is upsetting.

Frak MS, Frak Apple.
At some point in my life all this IT stuff made sense. Not anymore.

I don't see any settings for SMTP and such either. No real options other than something about encryption and saving drafts on server.

I do see smtp settings for a different, non-hotmail account though.

Just as a data point, I'm not having any issues with hotmail (16.4.1). At least, not that I'm aware of.

So iOS must have all the settings for HotMail baked in.

I hate it when they do that Frown

I’m puzzled. On my iPhone, looking at Settings -> Mail -> Accounts

All I see is:
iCloud
Add Account
Fetch New Data

Maybe because my email download protocol is POP3? POP3 supports only one email client, and for me it’s the one on my MacBook, so I have no email client on my iPhone. My email provider is fastmail.com which provides an excellent web interface that I use on my iPhone. Most folks seeing me use it would think I was using an email client. Fastmail also supports IMAP if you like that download protocol.

If you are using either Microsoft or Gmail for mail on the iPhone, I would suggest using their native apps.

I use Outlook for my work email and Thunderbird for my personal email that uses Hotmail.

I used the Gmail app for Gmail.

I prefer the Outlook app but don't want to mix the accounts

It's highly unlikely an iPhone using the iOS/iPadOS app and Apple/iCloud email uses POP3. There are no settings for the message download protocol for those and all the email I see on my iPhone I see on my iPad. Move or delete on one, it's moved/deleted on the other. That wouldn't happen with POP3.

Anyway: It's the same on my iPhone and iPad: The configs for my mail server are enumerated, those for Apple Mail are not.

There's really no good reason at all to do that. SMTP is SMTP. IMAP is IMAP. POP3 is POP3. They're standards.

Even Microsoft, which, historically, has sometimes been known to take a rather blasé approach to standards, gets those right.

Download the Outlook app and setup your Hotmail account in that app, see if it solves your problem, this will get you out of the issues with the iPhone email system, once it's up and running and all information in the app you can delete the email account from your iPhone email.

You could remove and reinstall the Hotmail account on your iPhone once it's up and running on the Outlook app then, and see if that solves the problem.

Hehe, just can't help yourself, can you? Smile

If the email is Hotmail > why not either try from another machine/OS/email client or even better >> try from the web interface?
That way you can eliminate any device/configuration issue.

Also test with different recipient addresses as well.

It is also possible that some sort of spam filter is going on at the recipient> my spam gateway can stop email from other countries.

Somehow I just knew that was coming when I wrote that

It is true, however. MS, on more than one occasion throughout Internet history, "bent" standard protocols to meet their own needs.

But never the email protocols so far as I can recall.

They weren't alone, mind you. There was this thing called "Lotus Notes" (often referred-to as "Bloated Goats") that was so bad it made even Exchange Server/Outlook look good by comparison. (<looks...> My Lord, that... thing is still alive?!?!) They managed to break even email

yes, you eliminate configuration issues with webmail but are usually limited in the number of recipients you can forward any given mail to!!

The whole deal is weird.
I use my registered Hotmail account as my main account and use my iphone built in emailer exclusively. No more PC based programs. A single device for everything i use on a daily basis.

Noticed that joel, bob and dave where not answering and it seemed odd. Tried also other Hotmail and my ISP provided email account to reach them. Mixed results. Joel confirmed he wasn’t receiving my emails. Got radio silence from bob and dave, hence my two current posts.

Wondering if my iphone emailer is to blame.
Both my hotmail accounts can talk to each other.
MS has been bouncing my .com.ar based emails saying the server is blacklisted. My ISP doesn’t give a shit. Been going on for years. The occasional .com.ar to hotmail manages to get across enemy lines but it is the exception, not the rule.

Nicky, if you'd like to send me email from both your HotMail and ISP accounts, I'll take a look to see what the headers look like and some other info. See if there's anything that jumps out at me.

And if you send them, and I don't get them, I can look at my mail server logs to see if delivery was ever even attempted.

I'll say this: I think it unlikely it's the iOS email client. As email clients go it's one of the worst I've had to use, but, it's never failed to work as it should.

FWIW: I've repeatedly searched for a better email client for iOS/iPadOS for years and come up bupkis every time. I've also asked repeatedly in several iOS/iPadOS/Mac forums and received, essentially, "Yeah, it sucks, but, there's nothing actually better for iOS/iPadOS."
