I used to give until I found out they make more money than I do and don’t pay taxes. One was dumb enough to allow himself to be interviewed.

Heard the same from a medical school prof I know, their panhandler patient said "why should I get a regular job? I make more than you do!"

A newspaper writer went undercover and did it himself here in South Florida and made $250-500 a day.

The guy that got paid was taxing the other one. Basically, you can stand here in this spot, you'll pay me $30 a day to do so, or I'll beat your ass and light your tent on fire.

Basic, common, street thuggery.

Here in DC some are organized, some are not, but as I run into them everyday, I don't give a dime to them. Saw one guy begging in front of a Mcdonalds one time years ago. He then walked around the corner and pulled out a large wad of bills to count.

Close. First dude just got taxed. The conversation was likely less diplomatic... "Mother fucker why you on my spot? Bitch, Ill let you work my spot for $20 this one time."

When I lived south of Houston, I passed by Beltway 8 and Telephone Rd frequently. Always saw the same panhandlers. They had folding chairs, ice chest etc. one day , I saw a white van dropping them off in the AM. Another day, white window van picks them up. Other folks on the van, I guess to be transported to/from other locations. A well organized operation apparently.
