Florida Restaurant Sanitary Conditions -- Know Before You Go
Did you ever eat in a restaurant and wind up with non-stop uncontrollable vomiting? My wife did, and spent a whole afternoon and evening in the ER.

Or maybe a multi-day bout of diarrhea?

If you eat in Florida restaurants, get the Life Kitchen app, available for iOS and Android. It pulls health inspection reports from the Florida state website, organizes them for a logical presentation, and assigns ratings, A, B, C, D, or F (Eek) to each restaurant.

You can look at a history of inspection reports, see details for each violation, etc.

You can select restaurants by type; there's even a setting to show food trucks.

Life Kitchen is for Florida only; I don't know whether there are similar apps for other areas.

I've been in the kitchen of a lot of restaurants in my career. Quite a few aren't pretty.

Mrs. PHPaul worked as a prep cook and/or dishwasher at several places over the years.

Thanks in large part to what she's seen, we NEVER just "go out to eat" and very rarely dine out unless we're on a road trip.

Good to know, as we just rolled into Pensacola last night. Baron Rouge and Mobile traffic added considerable time to our drive.

Sky's Pizza made was great, I'll have to look them up & see how they rate.

Edit:
Sky 's Pizza Pie: A & A+ going back to 2023

Our other go-to in Pensacola, Flounders Chowder House, also A+

Anywhere you dine out you have to remember that a lot places struggle to find employees and the pay is low. The employee isn’t going to have a lot of concern or time to worry about the upkeep and probably only gives as much effort as they feel the pay is worth.
Lots of kitchens get pretty nasty as time wears on. A lot of hospitals are surprisingly dirty in areas out of public access.

It should be reported to the health department, which will easily be able to determine fault as other diners would have had similar outcomes.

It was pretty bad, but we did not know it at the time. I discovered this app after some of our restaurant-induced "festivities."

Kinda wonder what the results would be if restaurants were required to post the findings of their last few sanitary/health inspections on the entrance right next to their menus?

Don't know how effective it is but around here the county inspects every restaurant a few times per year. The restaurant receives a grade A,B,C which must be posted visibly (near the entrance?). Of course, all open restaurants typically post A; B would be sketchy (not sure I've ever seen one but I don't eat out much) and C gets closed down pending corrections (leading to A?).

Begs the question what drove the need for such a system.

I worry about this almost every time I go out to eat in the US except for the more upscale places. I avoid chicom and mexico (I got sick for 3+ weeks). I worry in Taiwan; I sometimes worry in Korea. I don't worry in Japan.

Skys owner kids and my kids go to school together. They make great pizza. Small world.
Flounders is meh, built for tourists IMO. Same owners as mcguires where I’d rather go for same money. The circle k next door to flounders is where the clerk shot a round into the ceiling to back off some yutes a few years back. I work downtown Pcola and we have some great restaurants. How long you in town ? Agape on scenic Hiway is great. Don Cha Peruvian on Cervantes in east hill also great. Brother Fox on alcaniz amazing. High end steaks go to The District or Jackson’s. Pearl and Horn near downtown also great. That’s near downtown. If you need more let me know.

We're here all day today and tomorrow, just beach bumming on the beach today, heading back to Houston Monday morning.
We're staying in East Hill, near Jitterbug cafe [decent coffee].

Edit: Email in my profile if you have any casual suggestions for dinner. We didn't pack for anything fancy & don't want to clutter up the thread Big Grin

New York City requires restaurants to post their health inspection grade, A B or C, near the front door, visible to patrons walking by. Not much about NY government I like, but I'll give them credit for this.

In the areas I've lived in here, the health department conducts frequent inspections and posts their score, as a percentage, in the front entrance of the restaurant. The sheet also lists the specific deficiencies. Restaurants failing are given 30 days to correct the problems, if they don't they are shut down. Failures are published in the local media. Having worked food service jobs here, I know they are serious.
