Man does it suck?
I have been fighting it for about a month now. Pain is not horrible or dibilitating it is just annoying. Never realized how nearly every arm movement involves the thumb and wrist somehow.
Been going to the Chiropractor for 2 weeks now and not much help. He says it is a tough one to get rid of because the constant movement keeps the tendons in constant motion.
Ibuprofen does nothing to help. I’ll give acetaminophen a try tonight.
Lifting kiddos in and out of bed and car seats is the worst. A couple movements send some seriously sharp pains up my arm but not to often more just a dull pain with a slight increase in sharp pain right at the wrist with some movements.

Anyone dealt with it and found anything that helps??

No, what is it? Similar to tennis elbow or carpal tunnel only of the thumb and wrist?

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Get yourself to a Hand Surgeon. He'll give you some pokes with Cortisone and in about a week you'll be back to normal. Yeah, been there done that. One of these days I may have him doo a bit of work on the Trigger Finger in my left had "social" finger.

I've stopped counting.

This. It's time to see a MD/DO and not a DC.

Yeah, I had it in my right thumb tendon and wrist. Very unpleasant and it took forever to go away, and it has come back from time to time.

Looking back now, it's funny. I acquired this nasty form of tendonitis by cocking and decocking the hammer on a Ruger GP100, like 690,000 times. I was giving the revolver an action job and I got a bit too exuberant. I was controlling the hammer in both directions, with my thumb. Hard to believe, but that's how it happened. This was back in 2003/2004.

So, I go see a doc at a sports medicine clinic. He gave me a steroid injection in the wrist, which helped in the short term.

The funny part of it is that the doc asked me what I might have done to aggravate the tendon so badly. I didn't want to try and explain how it happened because it sounds kinda goofy, so I just said "I don't know".
Afterwards, it occurred to me that I may have left the man with the impression that I didn't want to own up to beating off 16 times a day. Big Grin

And the Ruger? Like buttah!!

For those who have/have had it, is the pain continuous, or just intermittent?

I sometimes get a sharp, stabbing pain in the area that it usually affects, but it’s not continuous. I also don’t know what I might be doing to cause it, other than possibly handgun shooting. The pain usually just suddenly appears, often when my hand is virtually at rest. It lasts for a while, then goes away.

For me it is continuous when moving the wrist or thumb.
When not moving the area feels tight. To determine if you have it stick your arm out, tuck your thumb down with all your finger wrapped around it (ie a fist that will break your thumb if you punched someone) then rotate your wrist down. There is a picture of what I described in the link before.
If you have it the pain will be quite severe.

I presume mine is from lift, carrying, and putting the 2 youngest boys in their car seats and bed.
As those activities are when the discomfort is most prominent.
It is my left hand and oddly enough no discomfort at all when shooting pistols weak hand only.

Yes, I do that and it doesn’t cause the pain, but I was wondering if it still might be intermittent. The pain I get is in the same area, so I thought it might have the same basic cause.

Do not discount more conservative treatments-
A thumb spica splint ( Velcro wrist brace that encompasses the thumb and limits movement of thumb) worn as I tell my patients ) 23/7 - remover to ice, wash hands and shower and other wise left on even at night will in 3 weeks “cure” 80% of cases. Ice the wrist for 15-20 minutes 4-5 times daily as well. If using ibuprofen you need to use a lot more than people typically use- 10 to 12 200mg over the counter tablets every day regardless of pain level for 2-3 weeks as well.
If this fails, a steroid injection is a reasonable next step.
When I was working in hand surgery exclusively the breakdown was:
Splint/ice/ibuprofen- 80% of patients cured
Injection 15/20 cured
5 required surgical release

That is a lot of ibuprofen!!
Getting ready to have 2 weeks off work so I was going to go the splint route there.

Question about the ice.
I was out in the cold yesterday below freezing for about 20 minutes yesterday with no gloves and by the end I was unable to move my thumb until I warmed up.

I have Dupuytren's contracture of the ligament to my right thumb. The hand Doctor said that it typically does not hurt. What does hurt is arthritis in the base of my thumb. I find relief for that in what the previous poster said. I bought a brace for my wrist and thumb which limits the thumb movement. I hope it gets better, but since it is arthritis I don't think it will. BTW my brace costs about 10 bucks from WalMart. I have seen others in the 80+ range. There is an advert in my VFW mag for one.
