One of the sites is a three minute drive from my house. I praying they pick my location, should add 10%+ to home value and will mean I can likely rent it for a pretty penny.

Amazon announces its list of 20 candidates for second headquarters

While the race is far from over, Amazon (AMZN) announced Thursday it has narrowed down its list of 238 proposals from across to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to 20 candidates, who all hope they will get a chance to become the e-commerce giant’s second headquarters.

“Thank you to all 238 communities that submitted proposals. Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough – all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity,” Holly Sullivan at Amazon Public Policy said in a statement. “Through this process we learned about many new communities across North America that we will consider as locations for future infrastructure investment and job creation.”

Amazon said it evaluated each of the proposals based on the criteria outlined in the request for proposal (RFP) to create the list of finalists that will continue on to the next stage.

Over the next couple months, the company said it plans to work with each of the candidate locations to dive deeper into their proposals as well as evaluate the feasibility of a future partnership that can accommodate the company’s hiring plans. Amazon added that it expects to make a final decision this year.

Amazon’s new HQ2 will be a complete headquarters, with plans to invest over $5 billion and create as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs.

Here is the list of the 20 metropolitan areas that are moving to the next phase (in alphabetical order):

- Atlanta, Ga.
- Austin, Texas
- Boston, Mass.
- Chicago, Ill.
- Columbus, Ohio
- Dallas, Texas
- Denver, Colo.
- Indianapolis, Ind.
- Los Angeles, Calif.
- Miami, Fla.
- Montgomery County, Md.
- Nashville, Tenn.
- Newark, N.J.
- New York City, N.Y.
- Northern Virginia, Va.
- Philadelphia, Pa.
- Pittsburgh, Pa.
- Raleigh, N.C.
- Toronto, Ontario
- Washington, D.C.

Link to the copy of the original RFP details as well.

Not as long as I would have expected.

I predict Austin as the weirdest locale on the list, but with Dallas or ATL close seconds due to air access.

I can't imagine 50,000 more commuters on the already clogged streets of Austin.

You'll see bumper to bumper traffic most of the day in that case. With the tax breaks they will demand, the benefits to the city will not be what they claim.

Newark isn't a bad location. Rail, air and road access all within a mile. They can bulldoze the drap area and build it.

Nashville probably makes the most sense with the central local and low cost of living.

Pittsburgh makes even more sense. Lower cost of living, plenty of room for building. Better location for shipping, less traffic. Under utilize airport, both a small county and International Airport.

Austin might actually be the closest city in terms of ethos to what exists in Seattle right now. I'm not sure if Amazon would consider itself a lifestyle company, but it kind of makes sense in those terms.

They’re already based near one of the busiest ports on West Coast so I’d think being near a busy port on east coast would make sense. I’d think the southeast would be best due to lower cost of living and more business friendly. Atlanta and Raleigh make sense to me.

In the Gulf Coast, Houston (not on the list)would make sense since it’s the busiest port in the Gulf and Bush Intercontintal is more international than Austin’s airport. Dallas’ real estate is out of control and it’s hard to believe they managed to have more highways fouled up from construction than Houston. Austin’s traffic is a lost cause.

Usually, at this point with an RFP, a shortlist is prepared. I guess this is the “short” list.

Traffic into Austin is awful. A better site would be a small town within 25 miles of Austin, such as between Austin and San Anonio. This would provide access to several universities as well a better access and less traffic. Close proximity to the 85 mph toll rd would be a hoot.

I hope it’s not Dallas. We’ve got too many people here already and the housing shortage is driving real estate prices sky high.

No kidding. When they announced that SLC wasn't on the list, I breathed a sigh of relief. We're growing like wildfire as it is, and we don't need anymore libtards until we can fully assimilate the ones we already have.

I'm wondering why they chose all big cities. Wouldn't it make more sense to build warehouses and shipping stations in small towns outside of city limits? Lower property cost, less tax burden, lower cost workforce, etc.

Am I looking at it wrong?

Probably because "Big Cities" are the only ones with coffers full enough to offer the tax forgiveness, and other enticements... with the corresponding opportunity for graft, etc! Mad

An economists in Los Angeles is complaining that if the city gets the nod it'll raise home prices and hence, increase the homeless population.

How's that for a liberal city evaluation?

This isn't a shipping center, it's a second HQ location.

We are offering them $30 million dollar building/site.

Site requirements:

VA's proposed site:

*Brand new Metro stop is going right next to the building/campus.

*Under 30 miles to D.C, the entire Metro Area is filled with some of the most educated workers in America.

*Site is right off Dulles Toll Road which connects it to the Beltway and Rt. 66.

*Under five minutes to Dulles International Airport.

*Free building/campus
