May 2020 update.

Today was a great day.

The underground piping from the well to the house developed a major leak.

I discovered it yesterday. It could have been there for weeks or even months.

I was able to rent a miniexcavator from a neighbor. That gave me the strong back I needed to dig down and find the leak.

So I spent the day with my spouse (we are still separated) digging in marine clay mud until, by dint of good luck, we found the leak right away.

Then the repair parts I got which were marked 1 1/2 turned out to be larger than the pipe., keeping me from finishing the project in one day. I managed not to even curse, a miracle since I have no water and can't shower.

So why am I dredging this up?

Because 19 months ago I was released from the rehab barely able to walk with a walker.

Yesterday and today I worked as hard as I ever did before I got sick. I walked about a mile each day, and today moved about half a cubic yard of clay and mud by hand (and about two cubic yards with the excavator). I also got up and down probably 20 times.

And I am still functional enough to be able to type this up.

So once again, to each of you who prayed for me or sent out good vibes, THANK YOU.

Good for you for dealing with this latest headache while keeping it in perspective. Most impressive that you have regained so much physical ability that you are able to perform this level of back breaking work.

When I wore a younger man's clothes I worked physical jobs, enjoyed physical activities, and played some sports...but health issues have cost me a lot of my physical ability. My doctors seem to be happy with my improvements...but I've lost so much strength, endurance, and flexibility its disheartening... physical things I used to be able to do without giving them a thought, now I either am not able to do and must ask someone else to, or I must first plan out, simple things like getting on the floor and getting back up, or basic car maintenance, or even opening a stubborn jar lid. Still working on regaining what physical ability I can.

A few days ago I had just gotten home, was getting out of my car, when I noticed a young couple that was obviously moving into the neighborhood and unloading the last piece of heavy furniture out of a pick up truck. My first instinct was to rush over and help them, but I quickly realized that 1) I can't rush anymore 2) I need to stretch before attempting anything physical and 3) I probably wasn't strong enough to lift my end of the furniture and if I tried I'd only make a fool of myself, hurt myself, or simply get in the way of the task. Frown

For those younger guys reading this, losing your physical ability, losing your strength is no small thing and shouldn't be taken for granted. Make the effort to retain or regain your physical abilities while you are young enough to do so...the efforts you make now will pay off later as you get older.

Sig2340, reading what you are physically capable of, I'm actually envious...but it also gives me hope that maybe I can get stronger with time and effort.

Glad you are still walkin' and talkin' and contributing on the forum!

Glad you’re doing better Sig2340. I’m really glad for you. BTW, as they always say in the cowboy movies, I’m obliged to you. You gave me excellent advice when others steered me wrong. Potentially saving me a stay at Club Fed. Thank You again.

So happy to hear you’re doing well. I opened up a two year old thread expecting the worst.
Sincerely happy you’re doing good.

Been in a similar situation after my bypass. The resiliency of the human body and spirit is amazing.
