We just drove through Tualatin on our way back from Long Beach, WA. The 26 was a pretty drive, and we didnt have any issues to the west and south of Portland. They have a nice Cabelas in Tualatin as well if you need to stock up on goods.

I've lived here for 20 years.

The protests are not a problem. They have calmed down quite a bit. Unless you are going to tour downtown PDX you won't even notice.

Besides that:

Corona Virus has shut down a lot of the great things to see and do. So You are going to miss a lot just from that alone. If you can put the visit off till next year do it.

The protests are happening in specific areas of downtown Portland. Unless you are there during the hours of protests, you won't be impacted by them at all. Also the protests have died down a lot. They hardly make the local news.

I will be in Downtown PDX tomorrow, for a meeting within a few blocks of the protest area. I'll take a look at it.

You can easily just drive through Portland on the interstate and expressways. You'll miss the protest completely and will not have any issues what so ever.

Take Highway 84 to Portland.
Right Lane for I-5 north 3/4 miles
Right land for I 405 (you'll cross the Freemont bridge one of the biggest of its types. Your family can look to the right and see the St. John's Bridge.
Middle lane, exit onto Highway 26 West, 60 miles to the coast.

---------

Getting off 84 and going down into Gresham to take 26 you will end up right in Portland anyway. It is suburban PDX. You'll end up on 205, or going all the way into downtown / PSU there's no reason to go there. Then getting on the 26/Sunset highway.

RE: 84 to 205 South, to I-5, to 217 then to Sunset highway 26 then on to the coast. You do miss downtown portland you add about an hour to the drive. You get little value out of it.

RE: Highway 26/20 starting in Ontario: That is a heck of a long scenic drive. Plan on a full day if you don't stop to see the sights etc.. Yes a lot of it is beautiful, But if your plan is to go to the beach it is about the longest/slowest way to go.

Last Gas Station west of Portland is in Buxton about 10 miles past Banks. The easiest gas stations are off 185th, Cornelius Pass, or North Plains. The Banks gas station is out of the way.

---------
Overall you won't have a problem following 84, I-5/405, then 26 west.

I like the Oregon Coast enough that I'd live there even with the shit state government.

However, I'd avoid Portland. Simply because the traffic sucks. The last time I went down there I was stuck on that big bridge over the Willamette for over an hour in the traffic.

The protests are small and getting smaller and you won't notice unless you're in Downtown next to the Federal Justice Center.

Good point, I meant North Plains, but had a brain fart.

185th has a Chick-Fil-a which is really good. Just sayin.

Speaking of food, at CB, if the Irish Table is open, then go. Otherwise try the driftwood. And the Lazy Susan for breakfast. Cannon Beach Hardware for more informal dining.
