I have a few thousand photos I'd like to have scanned and digitized with a commercial service like Scan My Photo's, Legacy Box or whomever. In my scenario, I would send in the photos, have them scanned and then returned to me with the output. The output would be a CD Rom and/or a USB Drive and/or Cloud availability. Choices, flexibility, quality of the output and cost are considerations.

Anyone have experience or have a recommendation for a good service and what to be aware of utilizing these services? Thanks!

You have a good list plus the Costco option to choose from. I'm certain there are others out there that will do a good job, maybe even some smaller local companies.

One thing I would do is trim down to the most important images. I've been going through a lot of photos and have been ditching the ones that are not a good quality or mostly show the back of people's heads.

Doing that will certainly save you a lot of money as SigSAC mentioned, it will not be inexpensive to do this.

I’ve looked at most of the available services. One discovery was that a number of the services are actually the same one offered under different company names. Kodak was one that was the same as several others Legacybox I believe. I’ll try to find my notes. The reviews on any of them were mixed.

What they all had in common - unbelievably expensive.

My wife just got finished scanning all of our family photos using a scan snap scanner into Apple photos. She actually enjoyed it as she had an excuse to pull out all the old photo albums and look at all the photos.

Now if you are doing this as part of a business then you may have no desire to DIY.

You might also consider hiring your kid or a neighbor kid to do the repetitive work. Likely would be cheaper for you and a win for the kid getting the work. It's not rocket surgery and the results with a mid level scanner are pretty impressive.
