Selling a Car - Advice Needed
Team,

I'm looking to sell a 2008 Acura TL to fund a new vehicle. It's in good shape but will need to sell to help with a down payment.

I've used carmax previously which was fine, but has anyone used Vroom or Carvanna to sell a car before? Vroom provided an estimate of $2k and Carvanna $1.1k. Both are online companies that will come get the car.

Any feedback on these services?

I have friends that have sold with both and no issues. Are you buying from a car dealer? If so they might match the Vroom price and depending on what state you live in, there might also be some sales tax credit.

Yes buying from a Dealer. Didn't consider the sales tax side, thanks for that. Also considering private sale but that's been a PITA in the past, scammers etc.

The way the market is right now, those amounts feel super low. Private sale with title in hand and cash only; you should be able to get at least that.

I know a friend who's looking for a reliable car for her daughter in college without spending a lot (everything is way over market right now) so someone like her would happily pay more if well-maintained. Private sale is a PITA, but with title in hand and cash...

Do you need them to come pick it up? Seems like you're leaving a whole pile of money on the table going with either of them. A quick google search shows those priced from 6-12k depending on condition. You could probably sell it for double the offers you got in a couple of hours on craigslist/ marketplace.

That said, one of my coworker's sisters sold her car to Carvana. She wanted the convenience they offered, and it was a painless transaction.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

agree with that

the cash part and title is big. a bit tougher to ask for $35K CASH ... but this vehicle wouldn't be too onerous to get the cash on-hand.

all the usual caveats about meeting in daylight, public place, have a friend with you, use your instincts, etc...

remember to take your license plates

if you park it visibly in a 'high traffic' shopping center with a for sale sign and a number -- you'll get calls quickly

My first course of action would be to see what the dealership will offer in trade towards the new vehicle, shouldn't be any worse than what you were offered by Carmax or Carvanna and could easily be more. Have you valued the trade-in value on Kelly Blue Book or NADA? Their numbers might not be 100% accurate but it should give you a starting point. It seems to me a 2008 Acura would be worth more than 2K.

I'd try to sell it privately

With one of the car sellers, they are always going to lowball you because they need to then flip that car to make it worth their time and effort.

In this crazy market, you could probably sell that privately in no time at all. Use KBB to get a good idea of the CURRENT (it will be higher than you think) value of the car for a private party sale.

Sub $5K cars sell fast for cash, hard to find, Dealers are not interested in high mile cars over a specific amount of age, however, used vehicles are in high demand since they can't fill the lot with new vehicles.

Car auctions are hot business, big dealers are not even putting used cars on the lot as they can send them to the auction, in some cases virtual auctions to other dealers and make instant profits without all the paperwork.

There are a ton of people that need cars that can't finance them, and have saved up cash, you should be able to sell the car for cash easy, swap title and bill of sale, as is no warranty and bob's yer uncle

It would be wise to get a dealer trade value as CAPhil said, and if you state allows, how much the sales tax offset will be add that to the trade and it's your real trade dollars and the minimum you should take to sell it privately.

That done you can set a better price for private sale

Definitely will consider a private sale. 2k vs 5-7K on KBB is a huge delta. Too much money left on the table..

I sold my Mercedes to TX Direct Auto (Vroom) and it was a no hassle deal with a good value.

Hindsight, wish I'd kept it a year longer & it would've been worth a lot more.

Would have no problem using Vroom again.

Just curious - is it a stick and how many miles?

You may find that the “book value” is less than actual selling prices, too. Just like book values for guns.

You might even find the 'book' value is low right now...the used car market is pretty strained.

Yes agree private party.

Plus the 2008 are preferred over 2009+ as the rear ends look hideous on that era.

Just looked at Autotrader and there are 2 S-type 2008s for close to $10k asking...

Carfax has a 2007 for $10k

Keep an eye on Craigslist for comparable prices. You'd be surprised what used are going for now.

If it's a manual and/or a Type S, it's definitely worth more than those offers.

The 3G TL is regarded pretty highly on the Acura forum.
Personally, I preferred the 2G.

If it's in good shape, I could see you possibly doubling those sales numbers with a private sale if it's an auto/non Type S.
A Type S would probably be >$5k in great shape, more if a manual.

Sadly, auto and non Type-S
