After living in the Midwest most of my life, I am moving to Georgia from Wisconsin. I have 2 kids in college. One going to school in Wisconsin and the other in Illinois.

My question mostly is their cars and registration?

My son is probably easy since he is in a dorm and we will just transfer the registration to Georgia.

However, my daughter’s situation may be more complicated. She is 21 and living in apartments…she is in an internship now and will move again in January to another apartment. Depending on how things shape up in terms of a summer internships, she may be staying at the same address for a year or so….or she may go to another state for the summer.

Can I just sign over the title and let her stay a Wisconsin resident? Or do I just convert her over. My reasoning is due to her possibly not bringing the car down for the emission requirement? Also, does anyone know about the timeline of that for my son?

Any advice about living in Georgia will be appreciated. I am moving to the Peachtree City area. Still house hunting.

You're supposed to complete a GA title/registration within 30 days. Emissions are required before that can happen in Fayette County. You will pay Title and Advalorem Taxes (TAVT) plus $20 for tag and $18 for title

BTW, the emission counties are only the Metro Atlanta ones, if you go south of Fayette it will not require emissions

Just a heads up, car insurance in Atlanta is HUGELY expensive.

My daughter moved from northern VA, DC area, and her insurance is almost 3xs higher in Georgia.

Call and check rates for yourself, see how they compare to WI. May be the answer you are looking for.

Metro Atlanta is a different world from where he will be and rates outside the city are not that high in my experience.
Otherwise, being under your policy and as a student may have some benefits so you'll have to check with your insurance company to know.
Otherwise, signing it over to her if she's the real owner may be a good way limit the complexity and she may be able to get some sort of student discount herself and will limit your exposure and rates on your other cars too.

If she's 21 and living in WI then transfer the car to her name and let her get her own insurance, even if you want to pay it for her, get it in her name and out of yours, since she's a WI resident and staying there leave it registered there.

They should register the cars in the states where they live, unless they are changing residency to Georgia also, including getting new GA driver licenses.

I'm interested in the comment about GA car insurance, as I also happen to live in WI and own a home in GA that I have considered changing my residency to since I now am working remotely and will probably retire down there, at least part time, in about 3-5 years. Car insurance is definitely cheap here in WI. Even with a teen driver, we pay less than $100 month for three cars. Before my son started driving, it was half that.

I can attest to the fact that you do need AC! I have spent way too much money on the system in my house in Savannah!!

We can't drive in the ice/snow. And we're ok with that. And we don't care how you did it in Wisconsin.

Are the cars paid for? If so, I'd definitely transfer ownership and let them be registered where the kids live.

Sorry, no info on getting tag registered but welcome to Georgia and Peachtree City, we just moved here July 2020 from another metro Atlanta suburb. Ya'll will have to get a golf cart in this city, it is a great way to get around.

My suggestion is to check rates and do what costs the least. It sounds like the vehicles are registered in your name. When you move to a state and bring a car into that state, you are supposed to register it in the new state. Because the one vehicle is staying in Wisconsin, I don't think you need to register it in Georgia-just leave it how it is if that's advantageous. Certainly you could register it in Georgia and let your child take it out of state for college, but that's not necessary.

The vehicle in Illinois could be donated to that child and registered there. Or it could be registered in Georgia and be driven out of state for college.

I will add that if you know what your kids plan to do next, that might influence your decision.
You may not want to register a vehicle in Wisconsin or Illinois if they plan on leaving the state with that vehicle after college, as when they move they'll have to register it in their new state.

You have some options, so do what is best financially.

When I moved to Georgia in 2014, my 2010 F-250 Super Duty was taxed amounting to $1400 plus registration and title transfer. The 2010 Explorer was taxed at $900. It is their way of welcoming you to Georgia.

Vehicle issues aside, welcome to Georgia and the south. You made a good choice.
The politics and gun laws are friendly and it has a strong diversified economy that does better than most other places.

I have a follow up question. So, each county in Georgia have their own license plate. If you move from county to county, do you have to pay new fees? That's different.

Georgia counties don't have different plates. There is a county sticker that is optional. You do register your vehicle with the county of residence, though, and you pay your fees to that county. When you move to a different county, you transfer your registration to that county within 30 days. But there is no new fee associated with transferring that I know of. You pay a registration and tag fee once a year (usually $25.)

There is a great skeet/trap range near the airport called Tom Lowe Shooting Grounds. http://www.atlantaskeetshooting.com/ There is a nice sporting clays course at Blalock Lakes in Newnan. It is either private or semi-private. There is a really nice place called Foxhall in Douglas County that does sporting clays, 5-stand, and bird hunting. https://www.foxhallresort.com/ And there is Cherokee Rose which is semi-private and offers 2 Sporting Clays courses, 5 stand, and Helice. https://crclays.com/ There is also South River Gun Club in Covington that wouldn't be too far a drive for skeet and trap. There are plenty of other indoor and outdoor ranges for pistol and rifle. There are public ranges at a few of the WMAs (State-run wildlife management areas). The closest ones to that area would be West Point or Big Laser Creek.

We had a house in rural Sharpsburg, back in the early 90’s, nice area. I’m sure it’s changed & grown a bunch since then.

With the kids, I’d let them be ‘residents’ of wherever they live. Yes, GA has that goofy tax on assets & vehicle values.
