Snake ID please
We found this critter in the dog run area but we can't identify what type it is.

Ideas?

Looks like a milksnake. A recently fed milksnake. Smile

Thank you, mark60!

Looks like you were spot-on!

Relieved it’s not a baby copperhead….

We've got enough copperheads that the cats play with them - glad to confirm that's not a copperhead. Pretty coloring, though.

Baby copperheads, at least the ones in NC, have unique greenish tail coloring. I don't have a baby pic - let me see if I can find a picture of one online.

There are a number of other good snakes that also have the Copperhead colors but the "Hershey's Kisses" pattern, bright colored tail on young ones and a rather fat body shape are Copperheads. They usually max out at 2 1/2-3 feet long too.
If you're new to the area you may want to look up all the snakes that are native to the NC mountains. Like north GA where I am, there are few venomous snakes but several harmless ones that are easy to misidentify as Rattlers, Copperheads and Coral snakes. Most eat a lot of other things we don't want around so it's good to not harm them if possible.
King snakes actually can den with Rattlers and Copperheads and also eat them for dinner.
I wouldn't want to be bitten by any but the Copperhead is unlikely to kill a human, the Rattle snake is a much worse venom.

I disagree with milk snake based on head size and shape. I’d say juvenile rat or corn snake. Milk snakes have flatter snout and their necks are thicker, almost same width as head.

These go to eleven.

I just caught a wester ribbon snake in the yard today. My dog is so dumb, I was pointing at it and calling the dogs name and he looks at my finger…when I caught the snake, Rock goes all crazy and wants to jump on it and kill it…

Soon as I put my hand on it and picked it up the snake pees and Rock is all sniffing it and jumping around…stupid dog.

I just yeeted it over the back fence into a easement for the power lines…it can go eat frogs there. I don’t need Mrs. Mike blasting holes in the privacy fence

Goodness, why do they like your yard so much?
Thank you for the info, I did not know about the green tail.

Thank you, now that I’ve googled a picture…you are correct!
The other proof is that a large black rat snake lives underneath the near by shed…must be off-spring…

I used to be a snake killer, but saw the error of my ways a few decades ago. I'm glad you (evidently) didn't kill this one. Copperheads around the house I'll still kill, but otherwise, if I see a poisonous snake in the wild I avoid it, same as the snake would prefer to avoid me. Friends of mine kill snakes occasionally, and will say "I killed a huge copperhead!". I'll look and tell them, yeah, you killed a normal size rat snake (or diamond back water snake, or racer, etc). I have a book on Texas snakes that I use frequently.

They like it here because it's wooded and the ground is covered with leaf litter. And with lots of food (voles, mice, etc.) and water (small pond and stream) it's great snake habitat. We have lots of other snakes including black rat snakes who compete for the food, and plenty of copperhead-eaters in the wildlife, so it doesn't get too crazy.
