We have an XBOX One S. Works great have had it since it was first released. Many of the new games don’t work on the S. So the boys have bundled their money and want a Series X. Walmart has them on sale for $600 so we are going to grab one today. We have an external drive for our One S can I just go ahead and plug that into the series X or will that not work and I have to download all the games and updates again? I own all the discs for all the games. I don’t purchase digital games. I see these fan/cooling stands do I really need one of those? The XBOX lives in a cabinet that has a mesh front and an open back so there is airflow. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I don't know about the hard drive, as I only use the internal one. But I don't have any fancy cooling racks for my Series X. It's on a shelf that's only open on one side, and it has never overheated. And while I understand the desire to have physical discs, it's not quite the same as having a movie on Blu-Ray or similar... With a movie disc you can pop it in the player and immediately watch it offline. But these days the game disc doesn't contain all or even most of the game. You still have to download the bulk of the game files and its updates/patches to the hard drive via an active internet connection. And many games these days require an ongoing active internet connection due to things like cloud saves, stats, love service features, and licensing/copy protection, even if they're not multiplayer games. Plus, not all games are being offered with physical discs nowadays anyway. So I'd recommend becoming a lot more flexible on digital games.

I am a complete Xbox newbie but we just bought a Series S for our boys for Christmas that does not have any physical drives for game discs and I was told by another family member that it's highly recommended to hardwire the console with a CAT6 cable from router and not to try to do anything over Wi-Fi.

Yeah the drive should work, and Rogue is correct on digital games. _____________________________________________ Proverbs 3:31 "Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways."

Meh on the Cat6. Your wifi is faster than the internet connection to Microsoft. _____________________________________________ Proverbs 3:31 "Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways."

I don't own an XBOX, but a Google search tells me that both the S and the X use NTFS on an external drive. This should make it possible to simply plug the drive into the new box and see its content without additional complications. You should also be able to plug it into a Windows computer and see the files there as well (might be handy for an on-site backup). If you want to install a bigger external drive, you can format it to NTFS on a Windows or Linux system before connecting it to the XBOX. The above assumes the physical connection of the drive is compatible with both XBOX models. The older one may have a USB-A connector, looks like the newer one is USB-C so you might need an adapter.

You shouldn’t have any problems using that drive. We are often streaming the tv and iPad, while an Xbox X is streaming multiplayer games upstairs, and we rarely ever have any issues. No one's life, liberty or property is safe while the legislature is in session.- Mark Twain

For real?![]() |
Yes. My son started with the Series S and an external HD. Within a month, I upgraded him to the Series X and we just moved his HD over. Not minority enough!

Note that Black's current Xbox is the older prior gen Xbox One S, not the newer latest gen Xbox Series S. (Yes, the model names are confusing.) So that may or may not affect the cross-compatibility of that hard drive. It may not be as simple as it would be if moving a HD from a Series S to a Series X, which are both consoles from the latest Xbox generation just different levels of performance/features.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ Had no idea there was a difference either. Well, Walmart tossed us a little Tom Foolery. Went to the store to buy one and it rang up to $689 after tax. I said it was showing $599 which should be $634. Lady was nice and said that price is only valid if you buy online. So went online and no pick up times were available for today. So they have to wait until tomorrow night. We have a busy day in the morning so can’t pick it up early. Kind of weird store and internet price are not the same yet I will literally be picking up the one that was in the store. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I've run into that with Walmart before, where it's noticeably cheaper to order the item online and schedule it for pickup from that store that day than it would be to simply pick it up off the shelf and ring it up at the front.

Yeah, Walmart has been doing that for a long time now. When you look at the item on their webpage it clearly states the price is Online Only. Then just select to Pick Up in Store. .....never marry a woman who is mean to your waitress.

Yep. There are 4 generations of Xboxs, with 1-4 submodels within each generation: 1) Xbox (original) 2) Xbox 360, Xbox 360 S 3) Xbox One, Xbox One E, Xbox One S, Xbox One X 4) Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X (newest generation) So there have been three different "Xbox Something S" models over the years, from three different generations: Xbox 360 S, Xbox One S, and Xbox Series S.

Own both an Xbox One and a Series X. You can use the old drive on the new console but you’ll soon find out the HDD loading times kills most of the Series fun. Go SDD drive if you can. I expanded my Series X with the drive that goes in the expansion slot. Not aware of your available options. My Series is boxed in under my TV. Currently temps are around and over 100F. I bought the cheapest chinese USB fan i could find that fits behind the console. It does a poor job circulating the air around the console. Not essential. Just go for an additional fan if you can HEAR your console struggling to keep the temperature down. Also, no need for the CAT6 for gaming. You might find it useful for downloading and updating large games. I live way down in south america. Ping is always an issue, still both consoles work fine on wifi. Media is a thing of the past, don’t worry. You’ll get used to it. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

Perfect then! I can notice my XB1 struggling with graphics sometimes where the XBSX has no issues. Keep the old games on the external Nice update/upgrade. Enjoy! 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

Man alive, it takes forever to set these things up. Been at it for like an hour getting everything set up and all the apps loaded and signed in as we use this as our main streaming device in the home theater. I think I am going to need to get a 4K TV. I think I will load all the new Series X games onto the XBOX itself and run all the old games from the old hard drive. Presuming it works just fine when I finally plug it in. It’s wild. A brand new game that I have a disc for still needs 30 gigs to update! Glad to see that this thing is made to stand tall and lay down on the side. Laying on the side will work much better in my cabinet. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Leave it some breathing room. Check the temperature after running it for a normall period of time. Enjoy. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

It appears that Series S & X games must be loaded on the internal drive. Apps and One Games can be done off the External. Probably going to have to get one of those extension internal drives eventually. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have.
