Unsure of what to use or how to solve this problem.

We have pavers and something has been digging a hole, looks to be about 1/2" diameter in the good base sand under the pavers.

How do I stop and prevent this varmint from digging under the pavers?

Edited title from snake to burrowing mammal, as now I am not certain what it is.
From Sigforum replies, I am now thinking maybe a cicada is more likely the culprit.

Use ammonia

Apparently, snakes can’t stand the smell or fumes of ammonia. Try soaking a rag or cloth in ammonia and put it in an unsealed plastic bag. Just put the plastic bag in the area where you might have seen a snake before, or worry about finding a snake. It turns out that the snakes will steer clear of the area around the bag because of the ammonia.

Here in San Diego we've been seeing, of all things, voles. Hole about 0.5 - 1.0 inch.

Wife and I also just saw a covey of quail I the backyard ( - now I know why my Brittany, Ruger, is so interested lately ).

That's great.
I am all good with him being friendly.

My argument with him is where he has chosen to dig and make his home.

Sure that's snake burrowing?

We have wasps that do that here and cicada killers that dig similar holes.

No, I am no sure what it is.
Wondering if I should be spraying anything on my pavers to prevent animal damage.

Just how do snakes dig and burrow? They may go into holes looking for dinner, but I cannot imagine they make them themselves.

I would bet a nickel that it was some sort of burrowing mammal like a vole or gopher.

Probably a friendly snake, let it be, consider it a vermin mechanic...

I would bet that is a cicada hawk...they can really move some soil (especially soft sand) when digging their nest...they really freak people out (an inch and half wasp looks really wicked and stingy)...but in the real world, they are pretty innocuous creatures (unless you are a cicada or spider)...never known them to sting anybody (I actually like them)...

I've got three nests around my house as I type...big mounds of excavation debris that look a lot of your photo Smile
