It is on an easment for sure. Using tannerite is probably off limits and I am sure there are federal regulations regarding its removal. I just planted fast growing plants to surround mine.

Call 811 aka before you dig. Ask that the local phone company call to verify if it’s abandoned or still working. It’s called a pedestal where I’m from. I once had a guy cut the cables and service drops then fill it in over a holiday weekend. He was near the beginning of the development and ended up knocking out everyone past him in his development. I did a damage claim as he was a real dickH. Cost him a few grand.

If you can find the responsible company, ask about it as "you have seen children playing with it and you're not sure that it's safe".

We had an old street sign pole (without the signs) on our corner, angled about 30 degrees and partly out of the ground with visible concrete. It had been there for years with no effort to remove it. We noticed some kids playing on it one morning and called the appropriate county office. It was removed and filled in the next day.

All the internal connectors where the wires are attached all completely black and corroded underneath the rubber caps on each block. Maybe the plant a bush idea is the best for now. But if there is NO voltage of any kind, then I suppose it could possibly be removed without any repercussions, meaning, nobody's home, and I'm certain if anyone called any communication utility asking for anew pots line, they would tell them it's not available, aka, they would never reactive anything using that box is my guess.

Play games if you want but this could all be solved with a simple phone call. "Do you still need this thing and can I remove it"

If you remove it and you weren't supposed to you're in for a world of hurt.

To check for voltage, put your tongue on the wires.

Then, hit it with the Linebaugh. Two shots oughta do it.

That'll blow the easement out of there, too.

In many areas, old twisted pair copper is still used for land line phones and internet connection. In my area they say fiber optic my house has CAT5 cable in it leading to twisted pair that eventually makes it to fiber optic about a mile away.

It might take a few phone calls*, but this is the right solution.

*If it is abandoned and unused, it make take a few call to get to the person who can tell you that and either arrange to have it taken out or authorize you to remove it.

It was mentioned that it may have been acquired by Frontier. Frontier is an entity verizon created for government tit-sucking, not phone 'service'. There is a pedestal in my yard, frontier discontinued POTS in my area 5+ years ago. It was accidentally on purpose ran over. I called & it was fixed within 2 days.
I have a fiber access box on the other corner of my property, installed by a 'contractor for Frontier'. It was installed AFTER they discontinued service to our area, and has no path to be connected - it's a ~3/8mi run between my neighbors property & mine with 3 conduit lines - no fiber, no continuation on either side. There's at least 4 other similar runs in a mile radius that I know of. 0 intention of ever using them, but they got a grant to 'install fiber in rural areas'.

Moral of the story - It's not your property to remove & you're dealing with illogical, money-grubbing corporate bullshit that might cost you more than you expect.

Yea good point.

Regarding Para's recommendation of testing for voltage with my tongue, I was on may way out the back door to test it for voltage, but then remembered how we used to tell our sisters to test their 9-volt batteries with their tongue, after holding 9 volt battery tongue-holding contests between the boys. I don't recall where I placed in the ranking, but after reading about 48 volts in those pots telephone posts, I changed my mind.

That caused me to reconsider my feelings about Para, whether I can really trust him or not, but because he also recommended the 500 Linebaugh as another viable option, I thought he was still an OK guy anyway.
