Jaguar E-Type voted best British car ever
I have friend who works on Jags in his spare time. His driveway is always full due to the large amount of periodic maintenance they need and the electrical issues. I some times help, when I am in the mood to bleed. I am always amazed at Lucas electric (the prince of darkness).

It depends on your definition of "best." There is no doubt it was the most stylish.

Many moons ago I traded for a '63 E Coupe. It was a bit run down, and I fixed it up and repainted it. It was beautiful, but it was my only car, and had to go everyday......Jags don't necessarily want to go everyday!!! I worked on it every weekend, and kept it going well. It finally beat me down, and I sold it for a profit.

I wish that I had it back, as a "pretty Sunday drive car". Their prices these days are out of my range.

Nice call, though I prefer the SWB Conti T a smidge more (let's see if I remember how to do this from one of my favorite YT channels...)

Very nice. I have never heard of that channel but I subscribed! Love those older/newer Bentleys.

The Jaguar E-Type is the most beautiful car ever built. And apparently I'm not the only one to believe that. Wink

Calling the Ford GT40 a British car is a bit of a stretch. Yes it originally started with a Lola chassis but the end product was a long way from there with a lot of American engineering.

Well, that’s like voting for the best Chinese aircraft carrier ever, but OK....

I’ve always favored the XK-120 over the XK-E, only because it was the Jag sports car when I first read about British sports cars in 1954 at the age of 10, and got a ride in one in college when looking for another used car. Salesman offered to sell it for $1,000. All I needed was a commuter car, and knew I couldn’t afford to keep that baby running. Sigh.

When I was 16-17, my friend's Dad had a 67 XKE convertible. I went for a few rides in it. I still think the cockpit of the XKE as the finest interior of all time, unequaled before or after. Walnut, leather. A separate starter button, and manual choke. Spendid.

I’d rather have an XJ-220.

Years ago I had a paper route, one customer on the route did Jag repairs from his home, just as you describe above, always Jags needing repair. The fellows head was always under the hood.

I happened to mention that in a business class, one student laughed. He had inherited a Jag from his uncle, said it spent more time in the shop than on the road.

I was dumb enough to own two of 'em - a 3.8 roadster and a 4.2 coupe.

Guess what needs to be removed to replace a starter on an E-Type?
Hint: it's the great hunk of iron under under the bonnet.

I always recall an episode of "Mad Men" where Don Draper and Joan the hot , red head Secretary visit a 1960's Jaguar dealership. There is an E type on the floor. Absolutely beautiful. IIRC the sales guy said it was $4 grand.

Yeah, not reliable. Yeah, not as intelligently engineered as could be. But still a stunningly beautiful car.

Next episode of Madmen: Price’s wife buys him the car, thinking they have lots of cash. He forges a check, when caught tries to kill himself in the XK-E...and he fails.

See also the 50th anniversary episode of Top Gear, a paean to the XK-E, ending with Clarkson sitting above the White Cliffs of Dover with British paratroopers descending with a Union Jack. He goes to start the Jag....
