I live in Florida and do not remember ever naming storms till they reached tropical storm wind speeds.
Did this latest storm in the Gulf reach the speed needed to name it than drop down to speeds below tropical wind speed to stay a tropical storm.
Are we naming the storms now so we as a state can qualify for some sort of government relief.
I am confused.

We now name winter storms. Like a participation trophy. I think it instills a sense of- Wow they're worse than before, they have names.

I was in the Blizzard of '78. Doesn't need a name it was.

Makes for more compelling "Breaking News" instead of saying "It's a little windy 1000 miles out to sea".

When the Weather Channel and all other sources weather starting selling fear. Tropical storms, sub tropical, derachos, line fronts, any winter snow squall. It is predatory how they keep the public in fear at times. Eventually we will witness an event that deserves fear and prep and should be treated with respect. However due to all the desensitizing it will prove catastrophic. And then who will they blame?

Maybe not as much of a joke as you might think. My neighbor blames Repubs who drive gas guzzeler cars for all harmful climate change, says it is as "proven sicence" as is the law of gravity. (I don't know if he had too much marijuana or not enough during his Berkeley days).

I'm waiting for someone to call NOAA racist. Then we'll be getting Hurricane Darnell and Tropical Storm Shanequa.

Global warming/climax change is de rigueur - who cares?

Freezing when it should/hot when it should be/ eh/ blame it on....something...climax change.

Sounds good to me.

Now, hand over the climax change money....or I'll let the most lethally boring man in the world, Al Gore The Bore to start speaking...you'll die listening...exposure time to death listening...one second.

And so the insurance company can increase your deductible. Normally, when a named storm is in play the deductible increases dramatically.

I think it was about 1974 or 75, family vacation down in the Keys. Wake up second morning of the trip, raining like crazy, wind blowing 40 knts at least. Turn on the news (which we watched as a family every night, read news papers every morning) Full on Tropical Depression hitting the keys. No news prior to it hitting! Fun day in the hotel pool in the rain. Times have changed.

For insurance companies. In some cases your homeowners insurance may have a higher deductible for "named storms". I know ours is that way.
