My Googlefu is not coming up with the correct answer. I am in an ongoing process of making a shadow box for my Grandpa's service in WWII. He received the CIB. Versions I see on eBay straight pin type (most expensive), screwback type (a little less expensive), push pins with sterling silver clasps (even less expensive), push pins with brass clasps (still less expensive), and then there are the $8 ones you can get today at army surplus type stores, I assume they aren't made of sterling silver like the above ones. I really can't tell the difference from the front of any of them. There appears to be people who collect CIB's, maybe one of them is on SF and can steer me the correct way. I think a push pin one would be the easiest to display in the shadow box, but I'm not sure if that is period correct.

This site might help you determine which CIB is correct. http://36thair3ad.homestead.com/CIB.html

I earned my CIB in Iraq in 2003 and wear it proudly on my uniform still.

Like you said, they all look the same from the front. I think you are over-thinking it. As a vet with a CIB myself, the thought wouldn't enter my mind to wonder if it was period correct if someone made me a shadow box.

That said, even though they look the same, a sterling silver one would be a nice touch if a reasonable price, I wouldn't pay extra for a particular attachment method though for a shadow box.
