Back to Rolex classics

Here are two classic Rolexes I am thankful to have obtained in the last few weeks and am now happily wearing:

Rolex 5513 Submariner (1978) with Mark 2 Maxi dial
Rolex GMT Master 1675 (1962)

The 1962 GMT was serviced by Lidditz and the 1978 is in the hands of Phillip Ridley now.

The 1962 dial is original and its hands and bezel insert are replacements.

I like the classics as these and this Triumph Spitfire I obtained in Oklahoma recently.

Classic Rolex?

My twin brother has a 1957 Zephyr and a 1550.

I’m more of a Casio and AMC Pacer kind of guy…

My Casio is currently in the hands of Fred at Rexall Drugs having the battery replaced.

Good for you and congratulations. It’s interesting to me how our minds are wired differently to be stimulated by different things in different ways. I get the car. I see the car and I think, “nice! That’s desirable, I wouldn’t mind having that.”

I look at the watches and I like Rolex. I have a date just also. But from when I got it, I’ve wanted a SkyDweller in stainless and a blue dial. But I think that’s an itch that will never be scratched because I can’t justify it - I don’t work anymore, I don’t fly to different time zones on a regular basis, and even if I did, the places where those different time zones are will make me just a target for a mugging. So it’s like I stole the Mona Lisa but I can’t ever show it to anyone or let anyone know.

In any case, I think the enjoyment you get from the classic watches is the enjoyment I get from enjoying an 18 year old whiskey. I think of the hands involved and the planning that started 18 years ago just to get me that glass of whiskey I’m sipping 18 years later.

Yes my user name - we have 4 the Midget, 2 MGBs, and the Spitfire.

The Midget when the steering column failed at 65-70 mph and I lost all steering hitting the guardrail. Minor injuries to me and the car!

I had a Spitfire. It was a 24/7 car. Drive it 7 hours, then work om it for 24. A friend of mine had a MG, same issues. I do miss driving it though.

Like the watches, it is a search to find cars without rust and in good condition and the main thing — as you posted - to keep them running well. I am fortunate to have MCLeod’s British Cars ten minutes away who has the parts.

Nice Bs. My neighbor has a 60s B in a similar color, but hasn't been run in years.
It's early enough that it has the non folding top, that you have to remove & stow.

Nice watches and car. I have a 1962 Pepsi GMT and a 1981 Two tone GMT with the jubilee band.

Recently saw a broadcast of Antique Road show and a participant had a particular limited Rolex that he purchased in the early 1970"s for approx $350.00.. Watch unworn with all of the original paperwork / original back case sticker still intact.... When told how much was $400 to $500 thousand but due to being unworn with all paper work would probably go for at least $700k if not more................. drill sgt.

Not really into watches, currently use a Garmin Forerunner 245.

As for the Spitfire, a teacher in high school had a 70 or 71 Spitfire and 6 guy's on the football team carried it up the front steps that dated back to 1920 and left it parked there.

Anyhow being familiar with the Spitfire and having raced several with my 1970 VW Beetle back in the day I'm a bit familiar with it's performance envelope. Today I drive a Ford Fiesta ST and I just want to know, do you want to race?

Those little Spitfire engines are the raspiest things I have ever worked on.
Don't get me started on putting clutches in those MGs.
Only the British could put engine mounts together upside down to make them nearly impossible to remove.

At least the Spit has the forward tilt hood, gives so much more room than the Midget

We removed them completely to get the engine out!

The TR6 the interior had to come out to get to the transmission!
