Honey, I shrunk my guitar rig
My wife and I were out for our 11th anniversary and we did some shopping. She graciously went with me to the Guitar Center just to look around. They had a TONEX One pedal on display. I had heard about them but didn't do any research. The wife said "it's only $179, just get it". Here's the size of the thing:

I got home and registered it and hooked it up and downloaded some classic Fender amp/speaker captures. Whoo, boy, this thing is fun. It sounds amazing and even feels great. It works plugged into my amp's effects return or I can just plug in some headphones to the output. I think everyone that plays electric should just pick one up. This little pedal could be my entire rig with the right monitoring.

Highly suggested.

There are a ton of pedal size amp modelers out right now. A person could leave their tube amp at home and plug one of these into a PA and practically no one could tell the difference.
On the few occasions my wife went with me to a guitar store, I was lucky to just get a pick.

Coming to a "play date" near me! Can't wait to hear it. I do not have an effects loop. Can it run direct into the instrument jack?

Does your son’s amp have an effects loop?

He (and his amp) are back at school.

I just scored an Eventide H9 Max. Man, that’s got some capabilities.

Is this akin to my Fender Mustang Micro but with the additional ability to play through your amp?

I can’t answer that as I’m not familiar but this is a real deal amp and pedal profiler.

It’s amazing how far guitar technology has come yet also how some things are still incredibly traditional.

I remember back in the days when pedals were all bulky. I picked up a Vox AC15 with celestian a little over a year ago and recently picked up a couple of cheap pedals: compression and chorus. Even a cheap $79 Squier Strat sounds good plugged into that AC15. I had originally bought that Squier thinking it would be a body to put some Fralins or Duncans in but I’m not hearing a reason to change them.

Yeah, yesterday I dumped 12 pedals on the counter at Guitar Center and they gave me a Line6 HX Stomp and $22.76 in cash. It’s not as fun and harder to use than the Tonex One but it’s more of a complete rig. Of course I’ll be adding the Tonex into the effects loop of the HX Stomp so, best of both worlds.

Mark, as a long time use of the Helix ecosystem, just be a aware of stacking digital pedals. Latency becomes an issue. You have an analog-to-digital conversion at the guitar input, another on the output of the Stomp fx loop, two more on the Tonex input/output, and another on the stomp input, and one last one at the Stomp output.

Those all add up. It may or may not be something you notice, but it's definitely something I get annoyed with. This is one of the reasons why people say "modelers just aren't the same, man....".

Add a wireless into the mix and pretty soon you've obviously perceptible latency.

And if you want to run a stereo or wet/dry rig it gets worse, with one side having slightly different latency than the other, causing phase issues.

Don't get me wrong, they are fantastic devices (Helix and Tonex), revolutionary. But if you find yourself wondering "why does this sound flangy and funny and feels mushy?", it may be latency.

I was trying to sell my H9 Max right as Eventide released the H90. The market for the H9 dropped like a rock overnight. A used H9 may very well be the best money you could ever spend on an FX pedal.

I got my H9 Max used for $280 shipped. But honestly, it's more than I can handle and only want a simple harmonizer. Probably gonna grab a Boss PS-6 today, as it's way easier to use for my needs, and then flip the H9.

I went a different direction. Within the last 9 months I purchased a Boss Katana 100 watt amp with the GA-FC foot controller. It does everything I need without any additional pedals. It really sounds great!

I had $110 in Gear Credits on my GC card and the Boss PS-6 there was $109. I figured they'd charge me sales tax, but did not and just handed me the pedal. I think this will replace the Eventide. It's so much more straightforward.

I have the 100w head version and it's my gig backup amp. Love it. I had it for six months before I realized it had an internal speaker. LOL.

Yeah. It’s a thing to consider. I’m thinking maybe I should have gone with the Boss GT-1000 as it’s supposed to have the least latency. It’s all good so far.

Mark, this is a change in subject, so if you object let me know. Have you ever built an amp? I know you've built some pedals. I am thinking of building a Fender Champ clone. Any thoughts?

I know nothing about Electric Guitar and amps but my son is getting into it. He has Epiphone SG guitar and the Mustang LT25 amp. He is trying to mimic sounds from bands he likes, is one of these something that would work for that or is there something better?

Thanks!
