My mother in law passed away

BeancookerMy mother in law passed away
So my wife’s mom passed away last night. Her sister called this morning to let her know.
Services are the day after tomorrow, in Korea. My wife won’t be attending due to cost to travel, the fact I can’t take that much time off work, and if we left tomorrow we would not make it in time for the service. (The flight is 17 hours and they are 16 hours ahead of Arizona).
I met her mom when she came to the states to visit us for a month, back in 2007. Her mom was pretty cool from the small amount we communicated. She also brought a bunch of soju in her suitcase for me. The most memorable thing was that she thought the neighbor had a nice looking dog, but what she meant was that she thought the dog looked tasty.
Her brother told her that their mom fell and hit her head ten days ago and this is what caused her death. My wife speaks with her sister almost daily and her sister never told her this, otherwise my wife would have gone to see her mom. Her brother mentioned that her mom was asking “where is my daughter” (she was saying my wife’s name) in the hours before she died.
My wife is taking it kind of hard. I don’t really know how to console her. Any advice will be greatly appreciated by me.
Any prayers I’m certain my wife will appreciate. She’s a very religious lady.

old rugged crossSorry to hear. Prayers for your wife. have to wonder why they would keep from your wife. I would think a couple of calls to a corner or medical examiner would be a wise move. was she in good health?

If she is a "talker" let her talk and lead and listen.
If she is one that tends to not want to talk, let her know you are there should she find a need to talk. Let her know how much her mother meant to you, even if you've told her a thousand times before this.
I am sorry for both of you that this is how you found out.

It’s a shame her sister didn’t tell her sooner.
"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

irreverentWhat church does she attend? Contact her pastor or priest and see if they can offer advice, maybe even set up a small celebration of life or memorial. At the least, they may be able to help counsel you on how to help her with this loss. I’m very sorry.

TexasScrubComfort to you and your wife and her family. Show her this thread and she will know that her mom was loved even by those she has never met.

SpinZoneSo sorry for your wife’s loss.
Stay out of the family business and support your wife. Having just lost my mother I can share that while we are mostly in sync, that one in-law, who thinks their opinion will fix 40 years of family relationships, is really a dumb ass.
Don’t be that dumb ass.

BeancookerI want to thank everyone who has wished condolences and said prayers. My wife started crying when she heard how many people had good things to say and
it brought her an immense amount of comfort knowing that many of you said a prayer for her or her mother. I cannot begin to thank you all for comforting my wife. It’s so much more helpful than you could ever imagine. Many times I have not replied to threads like this, but now being in this position and seeing how much it has helped my wife, it has changed my perspective on this.
Thank you so much. Truly thank you.
ORC, her mother was 93 and fell an almost two weeks ago. That was the cause of the head injury. Plus it’s not as easy as making a call, her family is in Korea.
SpinZone, I definitely don’t get involved in family issues, and honestly, I can’t as I don’t speak the language. I only speak enough to be polite and say hello and goodbye.
