I have a Vertx that I am very happy with but this will be my next bag. Especially, since it is made in the USA.

5.11 messenger bag. Simple, lots of pockets, lots of MOLLE, and cheap if you find one used. A benefit of the 5.11 is that it has a concealed handgun pocket built in. Let me know if you need one.

I've been carrying this in black for several years. Capable without looking tacticool. My only complaint is that the straps are not on swivels. You can add their Tacegami stuff easily for concealed off-body carry.

Vertex

I also have an Ogio Renegade that has been bomb proof. Just more of a messenger bag guy that backpack.

Here's one I've had for a couple of years. Kind of old school looking which I like and it's very durable.

My wife alternates between a Vertx pack in black and a Camelback hydration pack in red for that role. I use a Victorinox pack that my EMS job gave us a couple years ago for an EMS Week present. It's seen continuous duty as my work backpack and is perfect when we go on trips as it doesn't look tactical at all.

I'm a big proponent of the greyman look when we are traveling or recreating so my counsel is to avoid bags with lots of molle or such

My son Logrusmaster here is a globe trotting IT ninja and he invested in one of the Triple Aught packs and he loves it. It ignores my comment from above but while expensive it's a great pack. He has their modular bag for his camera equipment which he raelly likes.

I have a Saddleback Leather Large Briefcase in Dark Coffee Brown. It’s huge. It’s heavy. It’s expensive. I’ve also gotten a tremendous amount of compliments over the last ten years that I’ve owned it.

If I had to do it over again, I may consider a smaller option, but overall, I’m pretty happy with it. It definitely holds way more than I carry with it.

I use a Vertex Gammit for my daily carry. If you do go this route, there are 25% off coupons floating around.

I've had this same one for about two years now, really like it.

GORUCK. Not cheap, but incredibly well made. I might add that the company is Veteran owned and has a lifetime warranty.

I have a GoRuck, and would not recommend it for EDC.
Panel load opening packs are good for travel and staying organized on a hotel bed, but pretty much garbage for everything else. The GoRuck, in particular, is heavy for it's capability.

For EDC, I far prefer my Timbuk2 Classic. It has a big flap that buckles for security and for overstuffing, but also can just be flipped closed onto the Velcro while on the move. Seamless rear carry (cinched up high, bike carrier style), to front of body for access. No molle, no ridiculous number of pockets. Add a padded laptop sleeve if you want. While traveling without a laptop, the bag is soft and hugs your body. I have carried a mirrorless camera + 2 lenses, water bottle, and a down jacket (+ documents, keys, money and small stuff) for hundreds and hundreds of hours while traveling. My copy of the bag is on year 5 of EDC use, and still looks good. Lifetime warranty.

I still haven't found as good of a replacement for lightweight, EDC carry.

I've got a Nutsac!. Really. It's a very nice bag but it lacks organization. I used it for about a year but wanted something with more pockets instead of just throwing everything in. It also fills up easily and gets bulky. I just got a Hazard4 Grayman Tonto and it's got a lot of promise. It won't hold a laptop but it does hold an iPad Pro.

I have a few of the Goruck bags and the GR1 21 might work but if you can find one of the slick versions you might like it better(no molle). I use the GR1 26l for travel but it might be too much for everyday. I use an older Goruck slick bag in the 20l size and that seems more like what you are looking for. I just picked up Civic Half Zip from Evergoods and it also might be a good match for your stated goals. The Evergoods bags are well made and have much more of a commuter centric design. One of their founders is a former Goruck designer so you know the stuff is tough. Check out carryology’s and gear patrols reviews.

Filson... I like the backpack style over the handle styles...
