Boating on the Erie Canal last night
For a change of sometimes we'll boat on the Eric Canal, as we did last evening. It was a wonderful night. This photo is the lift bridge in Fairport. The bridge is interesting in that it is sloped, not level. It lifts straight up and down to accommodate boat traffic. No need for that with our boat as long as we went under the high end of it. Had a nice conversation with the bridge master (think that would be a nice retirement job for me!).

Neat pix. Cool bridge. What kind of a boat do you have?

Very cool, I remember driving over various bridges over existing sections of the Erie Canal in Pittsford, New York when I was up there for work training a few years ago.

Last night we were on a pontoon boat. When you see my photos from the big lake we are usually on a Chaparral 23 inboard/outboard. I actually do not own a boat. We belong to a club that owns the boats, and we reserve and take them out. The club has boats at 6 locations within 50 miles of me. After paying the yearly dues all we pay for is the gas we consume. Having grown up owning boats and understanding all it entails, this club is great for us.

So this wasn’t you on Lake Huron this morning:

This is the former Lady Ghislaine owned by Robert Maxwell until fell overboard and drowned. Not it’s Dancing Hare owned by Anna Murdoch, ex-wife of Rupert Murdoch. In the almost 20 years we’ve been coming here, this was the largest (189’) non-governmental/commercial vessel we’ve seen. This isn’t Miami.

I'm a professional Captain and have done the entire greatloop, all of the Gulf coast, All of the East Coast to Maine, almost all of Bahamas, down to the Panama Canal and through, and Carribbean to St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Erie canal is one of my top 3 trips of all places. It's just beautiful. I've done it from NYC to Oswego or Buffalo around 8 times.

Very nice story and pictures. Thanks for sharing.
The club you are in sounds like a really wonderful way to go boating.
I live blocks away from Lake Granbury, Tx and owned my own boat for many years but haven't owned in years. Mis boating at times but not enough to own again. About the best time was floating under the fireworks display on the 4th.

Great pics! The sky in these bottom two look like a Monet painting.

During my frequent commutes between Indiana and Massachusetts, on I90, I enjoyed lots of glimpses of the Erie Canal.

Now that I have the time, I should take that route again, but the side roads.

Great pics!
