I don't ever remember when it happened. But over the years my family has come to drink only water from bottles. By the cases! At this quantity, I'm very concerned about the chemicals. Perhaps a bit too late even. Still, I want it to cease.

I have a water filter system in a small sink in the kitchen. I'm sure there's some go to bottle/container. Preferably not from China. Preferably not plastic inside at all. Ideally glass or porcelain of some sort. Or stainless is probably good too, though that may impart a tase?

Is there a clear go to out there that everyone knows about but me? Something made in the US or Europe?

Some people think water tastes different from stainless... and it does, because they're used to tasting the plastic.
Wash a new stainless bottle with soapy water, give it a baking soda rinse, and you should be good to go without any extra "flavor".

Some benefits... most of the stainless bottles are insulated, so things stay cold longer.

I have a Hydroflask "standard mouth" bottle... when full it actually makes a pretty nice bludgeon when grasped by the neck, and if you put a lanyard through the cap loop....

Just seeing that the Hydroflasks have really gone up in price.. I also have one of these, it's considerably less and almost the same.

I know they used to make 5 gallon glass bottles for water storage. They were very heavy and cumbersome. Same size they used for water coolers. Not sure if they are made anymore.

The plastic used for bottled water, PET, does not contain BPA.

Are you looking for long term storage of a large quantity or just something to keep in the fridge?

Hydro Flask. The best of the best.

ETA: Beware of the cheaper bottles that are Aluminum and not Stainless Steel.

Why not just purchase a good RO unit. Good water on demand.

How much are you looking to store?

Nalgene bottle are pretty good. I have a couple of the canteen style ones (they fit in my old pouches lol).

I also have some military water cans I fill and then pour through my Pur One dispenser I keep in the fridge like when we lost water during Florence last September.

Lexington Container has lots of water storage choices not just the Scepter cans.

Ah, water bottles. Over the years I've probably tried close to a dozen, searching for the Perfect Water Bottle.

What you will probably find is you'll identify a water bottle that looks like it'll be what you want, try it for a while, find flaws with its use, and go on The Search again.

Unless you're very, very lucky: You'll do this many, many times.

So far I've found the water bottles that work best for me employ Contigo's AUTOSEAL™ system. I've a plastic Powerade one I use for my on-the-floor workout drink and a stainless steel Avex thermal one I use for on the road or when I'm working in the yard or whatever. Advantage: Easily open/close w/o getting hands near drinking spout. Disadvantage: Keeping the AUTOSEAL™ system gunk-free when using anything other than straight water.

I use a (plastic) Blender Bottle for my post-workout shake and an older plastic Contigo flip-top bottle for the water I keep to hand in the house. (Between cats and my own clumsiness, I rarely have open-top containers on a desk or table any more.)

One of my favourites for a while was a CamelBak Chute®. But opening and closing it required too much manual manipulation for the gym. (Germy hands.) Maybe I'll try that one for around the house for a while.

Two caveats:

  • You'll likely find one size won't fit all. Either for various people or for various uses/tasks
  • You have to keep 'em clean! Re-used water bottles are breeding grounds for disease.

For water we use a Brita pitcher that's kept topped-off, in the fridge.

Even if it did contain BPA, as far as I am aware, there has never been a scientific study performed that has shown any harm from BPA in anything remotely close to the concentration ingested as a result of its presence in food and beverage containers.

The studies that have shown adverse effects from BPA have used vastly more BPA than you would ever be exposed to, and almost anything will hurt you if you eat enough of it.

I have a RO filter under the sink. It has a seperate faucet and it's plumbed to the fridge as well for ice.

I use a 30oz Yeti knockoff stainless steel tumbler from Wal-Mart filled with ice then water and a 64oz double walled water bottle also from Wal-Mart filled half ice then water. I refill the tumbler from the bottle throughout the day while I'm subbing at my kids' school and have yet to run out of ice cold water.

The two Ozark Trail items cost me $25 total and I've been using them for 2 years now. Unfortunately, they are made in China. I haven't notice any flavor imparted by the stainless steel.

I use a TAL stainless bottle from Wal-Mart. It works well, has no off flavors, and has a handle to carry it around. There is a small opening for drinking out of and the entire top screws off for cleaning or adding ice. I have been using it for over a year and am considering a larger one for golfing. I think it is around $15 or $17 for the smaller bottle.

This isn’t a portable container; it’s a Berkey SS water filter a lot of expats used in Panama. Link

For portability, you might use some of those SS vacuum bottles that I found at Costco.

I use these.... they are great.

To save the expense of using so much bottled water when traveling in our motorhome I bought a Berkey. It’s pricey but with two large dogs we go through a lot of water. All I drink is water and coffee. For me the best part is no matter where we are our water always tastes the same.

Edited to add, they do go on sale...check out their FB page for deals.

Depends on what you want to filter out (if anything), but these are reasonably effective portable filter bottles - they range from getting rid of bad taste to getting rid of viruses. US or European-made. I've used all of them, anywhere from big European cities to Appalachian back trails to the Sahara:

Epic

Berkey

LifeStraw

^^^^Highly agree with Jeff. The Berkey will give you consistently pure water that you can use in any container that fits you.

For the house I use a Berkey but with Doulton filters. There have been some questions about whether the Berkey filters actually filter what they claim. I use Yeti type cups to carry it with me or Contigo.

Yep. I never dropped one, but came close a few times. Had to carry them down a flight of stairs. At 18 that was not particularly difficult.

Hydro Flask 21oz for us. Work great in theme parks too. Pack full of ice and you can refill 3 or 4 times before all the ice goes.
