I was the Eduation Director for a prison system. we academically tested all of those coming into the system and you would be amazed how many high school graduates we had that could not read beyond the second grade level. It's not funding or poor students, it all has to do with social promotion and the teacher's unions and liberal state policies are the blame for that.

Just my 2cw

System failed and she, failed herself even more by not telling anyone and letting the ruse go on for years.

My daughter was reading books out loud to her pre-k classmates at 3. She’s a freshman and never got anything but an A. Almost entirely self taught.

Maybe this kid from Connecticut is just a lazy idiot?

What to go down a rabbit hole start looking at questbridge

they take about 8000 kids and auto place them in colleges. Expense to the student is $0.00 they by contract with the school have the student pay nothing, pay all fees and room and board and often a stipend.

This is for poor/or first generation students. They get matched to top schools and go for nothing. Totally different application from everyone else, totally different process for admission.

Take Harvard, freshman class is 1400. 10% quest bridge admits, then 30% international students. If you thought you had a chance to get one of the 1,400 available seats, you were wrong, there are only 840 seats available to regular folks.

Now if you make less than 200K as a family you pay nothing to go, so the application pool is like 10X greater than it was 5 years ago, so your even more F-ed. It's a rigged system in so many shocking ways.

Connecticut public schools.

Connecticut public university.

Together, they graduated a person who is illiterate.

Take the accreditation from both the Connecticut public schools systems and the Connecticut public universities.

Teachers and school administrators want the easy way out, the marginal students get pushed aside as they need more attention. It’s easier to pass them on to another teacher the following year, that is until they run out of teachers so they get their alleged diploma.

To an extent up I experienced this myself, my problem was class cutting. By the time I “woke up” I totally blew my high school years, it took two Senior years, summer school and night school to get my H.S. Diploma. And I tried to get help with classes, a counselor told me to drop out, I was just wasting everybody’s time. The Co-Op instructor told me that I would be a failure in life, he only worked with students that had a future. Great encouragement and support from them, eh?

I ran into that out west when I was a department manager. Contacted the state unemployment office as I had an opening and with the state supplying CETA money it was a win-win situation.

After a couple of weeks getting drunks, ones that hadn’t seen a bath or shower in weeks, questionable work history (what was the reason for a five year gap in work history?) one young guy came in. Clean, shave, haircut, clean clothes, sober. Looked good until I handed him an application, at this point he said “I can’t read or write”. And yes, he had a high school diploma. Unfortunately the position I was filling was in a car dealership parts department, reading, writing and simple math were a prerequisite.

Well wasn’t this a kick in the groin? This guy was mid twenties, how and why did he get through the local schools? We were in a college town albeit a small mining related college but still…

Who failed him? Everyone from his parents, the teachers, the administrators. From what he said the schools just continually sent him to the next grade. He was working on a ranch but wanted to change his future. I felt really bad for this young guy but there was nothing I could offer him.

Sounds like the young man missed a Golden opportunity.

That young man and this young lady face the same choices we all do. They can blame everyone else or they can take responsibility.

She got into UConn, she hasn’t graduated yet. I cannot blame UConn for admitting one kid who claims to be unable to read.

"the President’s effort to defund the Department of Education"

I'll chime in with the others. Stinking liberals trying to cast aspersions on our current POTUS about ........ everything. I hate liberals.

The sap's predicament in the OP is 100% due to modern public education's sloth in passing students regardless of actual performance.

The same stupid people who run our schools are the ones who decided to give everybody a participation trophy so as to not discriminate against all the "also rans."

And (thanks to Jorge Busho; Jorge, you're an idiot) with the massive foreign invasion by 3rd worlders into, among other things, our schools, our collective IQ went down another 50 points.

Cf. the two pigs who introduced the Cloward-Piven strategy to end poverty. Their treason does not end poverty. It simply makes everybody equally poor. Their strategy entails flooding our schools with low IQ, non English speaking people.

That, plus (again, Jorge Busho, idiot) the "no child left behind act" makes all kids equally stupid.

Liberalism (of ANY flavor/variety) is the bane of America and needs to be eradicated. At any cost.

My Father fought in WW2 in the Pacific. When the War ended he went to college at Lake Forest in IL. and Concordia for a teacher cert.
He went on to become a teacher in park Ridge IL (One of the highest ranked school systems in IL.). Later he became a Principal in Park Ridge. He eventually ran several Fed.title programs. After that he became a School Superintendent in a district in IL. When he officially retired he taught at Carthage College in WI. When the woke BS got too much he quite.
I never paid a lot of attention to his professional conversations he had with my Mother but I do remember he always stated what a POS the Fed. Dept. of Education was/is and it should be eliminated.
I wish he could have seen the day the Dept. of Ed. was eliminated.

I'm not sure what the consequences she's facing are.

She graduated high school with honors, got into probably the second best university in Connecticut, and got a scholarship as well.

Former high school honors student who says she can’t read, write sues district where she graduated

Excerpt:
Nineteen-year-old Aleysha Ortiz says she graduated from high school with honors and earned a college scholarship, but she can’t read or write.

If she used speech to text, text to speech to research and successfully completed her studies, I see it no different than a blind or deaf person using technology to overcome their own unique handicaps (yes, I said handicap. It is a fact, not an insult)

Perhaps, in time, she will become "literate" in the sense that she can read and write without the aids.

I would want to know more about all of it and the issue of her suit as I loathe "social justice warrior/virtual signaling" for the sake of it.
There is no doubt a lot of garbage polluting the education of children that needs to be dealt with, and I am behind the whole overhaul and find a better solution to education than the mess we have under the Dept. of Education (and the "higher learning" institutions that are social emgineering/programming centers).

My sister teaches 5th grade in a district that serves a mixture of students who live in a city and those more rural. Years ago policies were put in place that prevent her from correcting student spelling or grammar. She is supposed to encourage them to write their thoughts, however they feel. She initially decided to hold her students to a higher standard and assure they could at least spell, and was promptly reprimanded when her 'violations of policy' were discovered.

If these policies exist, and students can be advanced in grade without making the basic requirements, it is the district's fault.

Sounds like the work got hard in college and she pulled the ultimate parachute of blame and is trying to put her failures on everyone else. It was fine when she was passing and winning by knowingly cheating. I knew all I needed to know about her story as soon as I heard the word lawsuit. I have no sympathy or empathy for her. I hate cheaters and liars equally and she is both.
