kkina6.4 Quake Northern CA
Got an emergency alert on my phone at 2:34 am. Waited for the shaking, but nothing. Humboldt County got hit fairly hard, though.
Anyone up there feel it? Any damage report?

ranger312My daughter lives in Eureka (Humboldt Co.) She and her husband are supposed to be getting on a plane at 1:00 pst today to come here for Christmas. We'll see. Over half of Humboldt Co. was out of power incl her.
She said lots of thing knocked over and fell off walls, but sounds like nothing major at her house. They have a 25 ft diameter redwood tree in their backyard probably 25 feet from the house that always worries me. But I guess if its stayed up for thousands of years, a 6.4 earthquake wont affect it.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) website for recent earthquakes provides a lot of good information:
www.Earthquake.USGS.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=31.35271,-135.74695&extent=48.66123,-93.77917&range=week&baseLayer=street You can customize the earthquake map by clicking on the "Gear" icon located in the upper right corner of the map. Just to the left of the "Gear" icon is the "Base Map and Overlay" icon where more filters are available to you.
Once you get the map displayed as you like it, you can drill down to individual earthquake details. The larger the circle on the map, the higher in magnitude the earthquake.
Here is the link for details about the 6.4 earthquake from 2:34am PT this morning:
www.Earthquake.USGS.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc73821036/executive As more data is evaluated by the USGS, the 6.4M first reports are revised.

kkinaI'm looking on the USGS site right now. Shows the 6.4 with epicenter near Ferndale, CA.
I got the phone alert with ShakeAlert, which services CA, OR, and WA.

6.4 Quake Northern CA
Link Northern California earthquake buckles road, shatters glass, leaves thousands without power FERNDALE, Calif. - A magnitude 6.4 earthquake rocked the Northern California coast early Tuesday morning, causing gas leaks, shattering glass, leaving thousands without power, one buckled highway and jittery residents feeling a wave of aftershocks.
The US Geological Survey reported the strong quake struck at 2:34 a.m. Tuesday, about 7.5 miles west-southwest of Ferndale, a small city in Humboldt County, roughly 200 miles northwest of San Francisco and close to the Pacific coast. The epicenter was just offshore at a depth of about 10 miles, but there was no threat of a tsunami.
In an interview, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said that he heard of at least two injuries, including someone who broke their hip and a child hit in the head by objects falling off the walls. No fatalities were immediately reported, said Brian Ferguson, a spokesperson for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
"This was a big deal," Honsal said. "But it's not the big one. This gives up the wake-up call. We have to be ready. This is just an opportunity for us to get ready for that big one."
The sheriff's office was flooded with 911 calls, with people worried about gas leaks and power outages. The PG&E outage map showed some 50,000 homes and businesses in the region could be affected.

corsairFerndale got hit the hardest, streets & sidewalks buckled, broken windows, and handful of pipe breaks, its primarily a dairy community (and weed) with a charming downtown of old Victorian homes.
Biggest issue is the Ferndale bridge, its the one bridge that connects them to the main highway and the rest of the region, has a number of buckled seems along its roadway. That bridge should've been replaced/updated/second bridge built decades ago since that section of the Eel River is susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis.

Go bag for each of their cars large enough to store 14 days of food, a pair of shoes, work gloves, and warm clothes.
First-aid kit for small and large bleed injuries.
An excellent flashlight with spare batteries
A portable radio that uses the same batteries as the flashlight. Having one with a hand-crank is a plus.
Also suggest they locate a removal panel in their cars where they can stash $250 in small bills. Just not a panel the mechanic will open to change a fuse or get out a tire-jack.

An ironic allegory for the impending charging inspired crisis I’d say…

I'm sure they will get right on replacing that bridge.

Don't forget water, always have 3+ days of potable water available. Besides wrench to shut off gas main and flashlight, water will be most important since pipe breakage is a high probability if a strong one hits and/or the house comes off its foundation.
Go Bag....unless your home is destroyed or, at-risk, there's no reason to relocate. Best to shelter-in-place, community-up with the neighbors, fix what needs immediate attention and stay alert to emergency services.
