I always wanted to learn to surf but pretty sure that ship has sailed.
Hobi kayaks are probably a better fit for me.

Went to HS just south of Myrtle
Also lived a couple years up hwy 9 outside of N Myrtle in a little town called Loris
If your planning on being close to the beach , traffic is brutal in the summer
I like the little towns that are 20-30 minutes out from the beach

I quit school in elementary because of recess.......too many games

Little River out through Loris on hwy 9 (as ElK mentioned) would be a great place to park it.
It gets hotter as you go inland, so there is such a thing as too far.
My family has had a place in Cherry Grove Beach for 30 years - know the area well.
(Edit - I do not miss the car property tax in KY. Bastards send it during your birthday month, too. Lived in Richmond for 9 years.)

We’ve stayed on the beach for the last 5 years on the northern side. 5200 Block of North Ocean and traffic is a breeze.
However we don’t go down south of there much especially on the main strip.
I did go down to a gluten free bakery over by the airport and traffic was meh. I grew up in Cincinnati which is a traffic nightmare.
Out by 17 (I think) around Barefoot Landing is probably the worst but certainly manageable.
However vacation driving routes and living may make a bit of a difference.

Just playing around on Zillow was giving me a lot of returns in the Little River area, I’ll have to see if I can add Loris.

Most plates are sent in your birthday month. Not sure how long you have been gone but they have added a bunch of specialty plates and many of those are paid in a specific month for everyone for some reason.

My wife has the UK specialty plate and everyone that has that plate pays in December for some reason.

I don't understand this. How does this work?

I believe NC is the same way.

SC does the same thing. You pay property tax based on the current annual value of your vehicle, with the value and tax decreasing annually (most of the time).

One perk, sales tax when buying a new vehicle is capped at $500.

https://dor.sc.gov/tax/max-tax
from link above:
Max (Maximum) Tax
Max Tax is a type of Sales Tax that is capped at 5% for a maximum of $500 per item. Local taxes administered and collected by SCDOR on behalf of local jurisdictions do not apply to the sales or lease of Max Tax items. This tax is due on boats, airplanes, self-propelled light construction equipment with compatible attachments limited to a maximum of 160 net engine horsepower, and other items not subject to the Infrastructure Maintenance Fee. Retailers of items subject to Max Tax must collect and pay the tax and file Max Tax returns.

The following items are subject to Max Tax:

Aircraft (including unassembled aircraft which is to be assembled by the purchaser, but not items to be added to the unassembled aircraft)
Boat and watercraft motors
Horse Trailers
Motorcycles
Motor vehicles (including ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), dirt bikes, golf carts, legend race cars, and UTVs (utility task vehicles))
Recreational vehicles (including tent campers, travel trailers, park models, park trailers, motor homes, and fifth wheels)
Self-propelled light construction equipment with compatible attachments (limited to a maximum of one hundred sixty net engine horsepower)
Trailers or semitrailers (pulled by a truck tractor)

https://dor.sc.gov/tax/max-tax

Fire ants respond well to hitching a ride to your neighbors yard when you broadcast insecticide granules about once a year.

$500 max on vehicles is nice.
We are 6% of the sale price. No cap (or at least I have never been able to afford a vehicle that meets the cap).

For anyone who complains about the humidity, remember, it’s good for your skin. At least that what my wife tells those from dry or cold states.

The biggest difference, I think, will be that some of the “outdoorsman” can be weird.

Most of the world, farmers/outdoorsman are pretty much the same kind of people - and I always found them easy to get along with.

Rural SC has those people - and they’re definitely the majority, but there are some very strange types, as well.

Been thinking about the Carolinas as well. I live in Florida and I’m getting tired of the heat. Vacationed in Hilton Head, Folly Beach, and Wrightsville beach recently. The fishing out of wrightsville was great. Folly was nice, and only 20 min from Charleston. Weather was fantastic compared to Florida. Tagging along to see what others have to say.

I live in the Charlotte Burbs. I grew up in Columbus, Oh. Moved to Charlotte in 83, back to Cbus in 87. It took me 19 years to get back to Charlotte but I don't miss Ohio AT ALL.

Summers are hot, but not much worse than Ohio or KY. Winters are 1000% better than Ohio or KY

Taxes suck everywhere, maybe just a touch less in SC than NC, but it is pretty close.

I would pick Wilmington NC, or Charleston, SC over Myrtle Beach every single time. Lots of reasons but the main reasons are the tourists and the 300,000+ motorcyclists that show up in MB twice a year - regular Bike Week and Black Bike Week. And I own a Ducati and an Indian.

Oh yeah, we need less NY mindset and more KY mindset in NC, so please come here. Smile

Before we moved, my wife insisted we vacation for a week first. We spent that time checking out the place and looking at some houses for sale. That might be part of your plan before deciding.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." The tax you pay to the state for property tax as well as registration is deductible on your federal return. You don’t get hosed twice, you just need to wait a bit.

I've lived in seven states (MI, MA, PA, NY, CT, CA and NC) and seen 48 (all but AK & MT), and with that perspective do I like the balance here in the SE Atlantic. We looked around in 2007, after deciding to get out of CA. Budget allowed us to consider pretty much anywhere, and after much consideration wound up a bit north of SC.

With kids, assuming you'd like them to settle near where you wind up, a couple factors to consider are the prospects for a growing economy to give them options for local jobs after college, and reasonable real estate prices so if/when they buy they won't be priced out unless they wound up with MDs/PHDs/MBAs/JDs. I don't know much about the economy in SC (NC is jumping) but I do know big companies have set up shop there for a reason.
