The adopting a stray thread made me think of a past best dog ever story.....
This is Shakespear in 1962

Shakespear came to us in a very memorable way. Dad was a Veterinarian. One day he had a short break in the patient stream and looked out the exit door from the exam room. It opened to a small patio and then to the parking area stretching to the street. The neighboring building was fronted on the street right at the sidewalk. Dad saw a little white dog round the neighboring building's corner and come straight to the door where Dad was standing. Little white dog walked into the exit door like he knew where he was going. He was young. Had one puppy tooth left. Left fang if I recall. I was 9 or 10 years old. I gave the flea bitten little white dog a flea bath. Toweled him off and made a bed in a cardboard box with a towel and pad. Little white dog was shivering and shaking a great amount. And the box was labeled to have once had salt shakers in it. Shakers was the prominent word. It did not take much to name him Shaker which soon morphed into Shakespear. We had just lost the first best dog ever in my life. Spud was an English Pointer and was the same age as me. Dam cancer. Spud had an uncanny sense of Dad driving back home minutes before he actually got there.

Good story.
We had a dog, Buster, who always went and sat at the outside corner of the house when Dad was due to be home. He must have checked his watch and known it was time. Without fail. Dogs are great friends.
