Just saying.

If I was planning to pull a Las Vegas-style stunt, I'd hardly leave weapons and ammo about where just anybody, much less the cleaning staff, would come across them.

I remember the shooting but not the specifics. I had no idea he used a sledge hammer.

Crook County which is Chicago has an AR ban. So that is where they will get him.

Apparently, he had the rifle and magazines out in the open on the window sill. I am not going to speculate on his motives, however, when I traveled to carbine classes (and stayed in hotels), I did not leave my shit out in the open on display.

Unconstitutional gun laws enacted by local ordinances are still unconstitutional.

With that said, there is not a single earthly reason I would ever set foot in that shithole of a city, let alone stay in a hotel there.

The LARGEST reason we avoid national service with the Appraisal Institute is because they refuse to leave Chicago. If the position requires attending meetings in Chicago, we simply say, "hell no", and resign.

NO stinking way I would ever go there willingly. Exactly because of this kind of crap. "FOID card violation"....kinda stupid shit is that? Any LE member on this forum that endorses that shit should be ashamed of themselves.

After the lawsuits and settlements in Las Vegas by the hotels I'm not surprised that the industry has asked it's maids and service people to be on the lookout for weapons displayed in the open and to report them to management. W hotels are upscale and aimed at younger travelers, part of the Marriott Group.

Lately, many of the downtown hotels have their staff checking rooms for contraband. Most of them have a strict no firearms policy and we've often been called to retrieve or take possession of firearms and sometimes making the occasional arrest. This guy had the rifle out in plain sight, uncased and sitting on a window ledge, not very smart. Make no doubt that this is political as this will cause the media to focus on this instead of the 380 homicides to date and the rapidly increasing amount of carjackings throughout the city.

Multiple arrests are being made downtown of CCL holders as well, charges being approved for felony charges due to the lack of a FOID card. My guess is that a few federal lawsuits have already been filed and we shall see the outcome eventually. Discretion has always been a an option for us in general, but there has been a push to make gun arrests and new police officers are drinking the kool-aid whole-heartedly.

I don't think I have ever been more disgusted of the policy makers, bosses and in general the department as a whole. I am exhausted, 12 hour days, days off cancelled, even when the rest of the department isn't, has taken it's toll. I'm drained and await furlough.

At least now the 30 or 40 Chicago inner-city murders every weekend will end.

Obviously a setup.... With Covid all hotels have stopped cleaning rooms so the cleaning service finding weapons sounds fishy....

Arrests of CCL holders without a FOID card? Or are these out of state people?

Both. There are CCL holders that live in Illinois and do not possess the FOID card. If you are not in possession of it, you will have your day in court to prove you have one, if not, you will be charged accordingly. Many CCL holders still have a valid license, but FOID expired, etc. Out of state CCL holders are NOT recognized here as Illinois doesn't allow any CCL unless it is state issued. Take it for what it is, but Illinois doesn't care either that they are making felons out of otherwise law-abiding people.

THE LATEST:

CHICAGO — An Iowa man accused of storing guns in a downtown hotel over the Fourth of July holiday has posted bond and has been released from jail.

Keegan Casteel, 32, of Ankeny, Iowa, faces two felony charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was arrested after a hotel employee alerted police after discovering a rifle, a gun and ammunition on Sunday, July 4, at a room overlooking Chicago’s lakefront at the W Hotel in the 600 Block of North Lake Shore Drive.

A Cook County judge held Casteel on $10,000 bond. The judge said that the married father of two could return to Iowa but must come back to Chicago for all court hearings.

Chicago police will keep the guns in their custody.

“There’s no previous history of this person nor any issues in federal databases, but obviously it’s very concerning given the position of the W Hotel to Navy Pier,” said Chicago police Supt. David Brown on Tuesday.

Police have not offered any evidence that Casteel had ill intentions.

Dude's lucky the cleaning crew or anyone else didn't just steal the guns. He could've been doubled up on his troubles.

So a 100 or so people shot in Chicago over the weekend but whe are worried about someone in a hotel room with a gun. Someone from Iowa. Not the wannabe gangster's all over that shithole but someone in a hotel. I don't know why anyone would ever set foot in that shithole of a city.

FWIW, I have established that he is a distant relative. Because of limitations in documentation I cannot define exactly what cousinship level he is, but we're looking at 8 or more generations to a common ancestor. I am interested and concerned, of course.
