Reinforcing why I don't watch the media anymore....
The local NBC Affiliate made a statement at 5pm that they will NOT share the shooters picture as they do not want to glorify him. Then spent the next 10 minutes talking about him in detail. Seriously?!?! Think not showing his picture checks that box for you eh?
I do admit that if the information shared that LPD has had multiple complaints from neighbors of him shooting in his back yard, including one that day, there are going to be some hard questions to be answered. Especially given that he already had a firearms charge on him.

Not in Utah. Teachers can carry in secondary schools and so can college students on university campuses.
The only reason you're seeing this thread at all is because of a personal connection a longtime forum member has to the incident.
Outside of this thread, there should be no discussion in this forum about mass shootings.

While listening to the police scanner last night, I heard that as well. A 911 hang-up call, stating explosives were placed around campus.
My intuition tells me that the 911 explosive call was likely someone other than the shooter. I surely hope the police track down the individual who made this call.
There should be some enhanced penalty for making a bogus police report during a major event such as this.

Making a false police report in Michigan is a felony.

Unfortunately, I've been in the middle of this shit. I can't begin to explain on how absolutely chaotic thing are. The sad, but true reality is that all credible information needs to be looked at.
"THERE"S EXPLOSIVES!!!" so the Police look for explosives. Turns out there's no bomb, and track down nit-wit who made the call.
"Well, I THOUGHT there were bombs" / "There COULD HAVE BEEN bombs" At this point, I'm all full of beating them with a sack of doorknobs to discourage further behavior like this. However, it also discourages credible information at the next incident.
You have NO IDEA of how much "STUPID" just comes out in people in crazy situations.

Making a false police report in Michigan is a felony.
The prosecutors office may file as a felony but probably plea bargain down to a misdemeanor. Remember the perp of was earlier charged with a felony when he was arrested and plead guilty to a misdemeanor.
Michigan has a firearm enhancement law, two years additional time for crimes committed with a firearm, this law has been on he books since the early 70’s.
And if convicted of that charge, no good time off of that either. From what I’ve been told that charge is rarely used but prosecutors use that as a bargaining chip, removing it as part of plea deals.
The perp was charged in 2019 with both felony and misdemeanor in connection with a firearm charge, felony dropped and pled to a misdemeanor.

A buddy on Facebook is reporting the shooter used a Ruger LCP in .380.
Going to be fun to see Whitmer spin that into needing a ban on magazines greater than 10 rounds.
But would be better to get a reporter to ask why existing gun laws allowed the shooter to be free or even be able to buy another gun after his 2019 arrest.

As has been mentioned many times, first reports coming out about these incidents are always full of highly distorted and totally nonfactual claims.
If the report of the type of gun is true, the first thing I thought of was why was he allowed to wander at will without being counterattacked. It’s another thing we don’t know at this point and therefore I could be imagining something that was totally impossible this time, but as I understand the Virginia Tech incident, classrooms full of young adults were trying to escape through windows while, at least in one case, the instructor blocked the door and confronted the murderer—only to be killed himself. Other times entire groups of adults have done nothing but cower on the floor while hoping they would be missed or spared.
My point is what if six or seven young men had attacked the killer and taken him down while someone was kicking him in the nuts, someone was jabbing a pencil in his eyes, and someone was stomping on his neck and throat? Would someone have been shot in such an attack? Sure, possibly more than one, but would a rushed shot while the gun was being wrestled away from him have been as deadly? In this incident even grabbing the gun would have at least prevented its being fired more than once before it malfunctioned.
In the Club Q incident in Colorado all it took was one—count ’em, one—unarmed man to start the process of ending the killing.
Yes, I know I’m just venting about something that has been obvious to me for a long time now as I’ve been involved in active killer response classes. I’ve tried to stress such a response in the presentations I’ve given, and I even teach how to deal with different types of guns. I am, however, pretty sure that those sorts of things are virtually unknown or not addressed otherwise. The response videos I’m familiar with are even very squeamish about showing the “fight” part of any response to such an incident. All that is partially what I was alluding to when I mentioned in another thread that knowing what to do and being prepared to do it are the most important aspects of dealing with any life or death situation.
But in any case, my question is obviously a rhetorical one. There are many reasons why such responses are so uncommon. As I say, just venting.

That was the 2019 bust. He may not have gotten rid of it as he promised his father though.
"In June 2019, Anthony McRae was stopped by Lansing police while smoking on the back steps of a building. During the encounter, officers found a Ruger LCP .380 semi-automatic pistol in his pants pocket, and he was subsequently charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a loaded firearm."
Prosecutors dismissed felony gun charges against the alleged Michigan State University attacker in 2019, charging him with a misdemeanor.
The felony charge was the result of Anthony McRae allegedly carrying a concealed firearm on his person without having a concealed carry permit.
The Detroit News reported that the misdemeanor charges placed the alleged attacker on probation for a total of 18 months. Had the felony charges been pursued, the attacker would have been barred from gun possession for life. But the ban on buying and possessing a gun was only temporary in light of the misdemeanor probation .
The Detroit Free Press noted Ingham County prosecutor John Dewane saying, “The misdemeanor conviction did not prevent him from purchasing, owning, or possessing a firearm after he successfully completed his terms of probation.”
The alleged attacker’s probation ended in May 2021.
Carol Siemon, the Ingram County Prosecutor believed that the prosecution of gun charges led to disparities which hurt Black defendents
“I was raised here in Lansing, in a diverse community,” Siemon said. “I’ve always had an interest in civil rights, all aspects of civil rights. As a woman, I’ve been a feminist all my life. LGBTQ Rights, racial disproportionality, immigrants rights. So, when I was elected as prosecutor, my goal was to try and create a more criminal and equitable legal system.” …
“We look at the data and that statistic shows that racial disparity is so unambiguous and so extreme that I couldn’t even justify,” she said….
“In Michigan, about 80 percent of people who are incarcerated on a felony firearm charge are Black, even though our statewide population for that race is only 14 percent ,” Siemon said. “
People, not just in Michigan, have been dying because of this revolving door policy that has been imposed in the name of equity. Rather than dealing with the reasons why Blacks –particularly fatherless black men– are committing violent crimes at disproportionate rates the Left has decided to create a free for all for criminals.
Carol Siemon has retired, and a tougher-on-crime prosecutor has replaced her. But her legacy lives on
A radical ideology has become dominant in our elite classes. One that values equity over all.
