Whatever the recipe, add a little brandy before serving. Does wonders for the flavor.

Word to the wise---Do Not make split pea soup in a pressure cooker. When the pressure nozzle clogs, the safety plug will blow out, and green slime shall rain from the ceiling. My Mom tried it once back in the 50's, we still laugh about the godawful mess.

Never had split pea and ham soup before, but NOW I want it!!! Gonna have to try one of these recipes.

Seems like cornbread is a must to go with it!

My mom’s recipe, which I’m sure was tweaked, and I’ve tweaked it as well.
16 ounce split peas
3 quarts water
1 ham shank
1 large onion finely chopped
2 chicken bouillon cubes or 2 T of better than boullion
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon oregano leaves
1 1/2 teaspoon of pepper
1 Bayleaf
1 1/2 cups of carrots
1 cup chopped celery
4 small potatoes, quartered

Combine peas, water, ham shank, onion, chicken boullion and seasonings- simmer uncovered one and a half hours.
Remove ham shank, trim meat and bone return meat to pot. Stir in carrots, celery and potatoes. Simmer uncovered additional 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until soup reaches desired thickness.
*I pre-boil the carrots, celery and potatoes- just partially cook, then add them in. Then use the water I boiled them in as part of the 3 quarts of water. I also like add some chicken broth (canned) as part of the 3 Q water as well. As you play with this you realize it really becomes about your personal taste. I personally prefer more potatoes and carrots and I like it to be thicker but as I said - personal preference.

Good crusty bread to dip in it, too!

ETA: of course, remove the bayleaf before serving.

I was so set on making one of these soup recipes today and also doing Skin’s peasant bread. I mentioned the idea to my wife who shrieked in horror that she can’t stand split pea soup. I never had it, but the recipes sound good to me.

Ugh. Now I have to wait until next time she goes out of town and I will make it.
