NOLA peeps, what’s the story on carry in New Orleans?
I recall some lame efforts to declare the French Quarter a “school zone” by the numb nuts running the city. Seems the courts shot them down.

Had been talking with the spousal unit about a weekend trip for eating and walking around, but ain’t gonna go without some comforting weight on my right hip.

Of course we will need to wait until Mardi Gras is finished. Been there and done that, never again.

What is the story?

Thanks,

RMD

as much as I support constitutional carry being passed in the state. I have to agree with my local legislature to make the French quarter a gun free zone. NOPD had the ability to "stop and frisk" prior, they caught over 100 weapons last year before it became enacted. most had drugs or were felons in possession. They don't have that any longer.

if you have a reciprocal carry permit and not in a bar, being smart you will be fine as long as there s no parade happening or an event which, by law already, you are not allowed to be in proximity of

in short, be smart, have appropriate permits, you will be OK

the only bar in the Quarter I go to is the Boondock Saint across the street from Preservation Hall. best poured pint of Guinness in the city and its a cop bar, owned by current, and ex NOPD officers. never a shortage of people having protection at any time there

Stupid question-if cops were stopping people and the felons/druggies were carrying guns, were they not in violation of the law? If they ignored those laws, would they also not obey a "gun free zone" law? We don't carry to defend against law abiding citizens. We carry to defend against criminals.

Y'all are missing the point of my comment. prior to July 4 NOPD was able to approach someone they suspected of carrying a weapon and ask to see their permit. If no permit that gave them probable cause to go further. as I mentioned over 100 weapons were confiscated in the first 6 months of the year. Majority of these people were felons in possession, under 21, in possession of drugs, outstanding warrant etc and they were arrested, taken off the streets. Since July 4, last I heard was less than a dozen weapons found, they no longer have "suspicion" as a reason to ask, LEO has to witness a violation. Absolutely correct, criminals do not abide by the laws, an important aspect to provide public safety in that zone has been stripped away from LEO. The reality is majority of shootings in New Orleans don't happen in the Quarter

It seems you're sacrificing liberty for safety...someone said something about that once ;-)

Also--I think you're a bit naive to believe that just because one has a permit and "stopped & frisked" by a LEO, that they will send you on your way...

Hmmm... A hundred guns confiscated? Out of the thousands of people who visit the Quarter every year? And of the 100, how many were prosecuted, convicted and jailed?

New Orleans. The French didn’t want it. And if the French don’t want it it’s not worth shit.
