I'll ask once more. How do you protect your windows?

Agreed. I've lived the other way, too. For ten years we were in Albuquerque, before the days of concealed carry, with bars on every window and door, plus a monitored alarm system. Daytime break-ins were epidemic. Drive-by shootings happened daily, including one at our grocery store. The schools were quite unsafe, which was the final motivation for us to leave.

As you probably know it’s even worse there at present. In the 80’s I lived in a rural community some distance from Albuquerque but found myself there a couple times a month for various reasons, many times late at night/early in the morning with inter-hospital transfers from our rural facility to Presbyterian, UNM/BCMC, St.Joseph’s, Loveless/VA hospitals.

On,y once did I have a sketchy situation, in downtown along Central. Parked at a uniform store while my friend went in to pick up his order. Hood rat, boom box on his shoulder, wifebeater shirt approaches from the passenger side and said “give me a couple bucks”, I said “No.!”

He lowers himself down to look inside and he saw my hand was under the seat, at the time carry was pretty restricted out there. Silently he backed off and walked away.

If it is small windows a foot off the ground then I am not sure what you can do beyond an alarm system. They do make professional laminate like window tint that makes it difficult to break through the glass but it has to be installed properly otherwise it actually makes it easier for a crook to break the glass and get in. The laminate has to go into the frame. For windows that open, there are cheap screw on window locks that prevent the window from being opened, but obviously does nothing for the glass being broken. If I had that type of setup, I would install a glass break sensor on my alarm system in that area.

Replace the glass with Lexan?
