I have a 35 - 40 minute commute each way to and from work.

I have a concealed carry permit. Probably on my 3rd renewal.

However I cannot have a gun in our facility that I work in.

I have a gun safe attached under my drivers seat. I have long been locking my vehicle doors before it became prudent to do so.

This is the only way that I can have any protection via handgun Monday- Friday. As the saying goes, don’t criticize a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes.

It may not be optimal, but it is the best that some of us can do. Criticize if you must.

As you can see you are getting a mix of responses. I think you have to take a few things into consideration. What kind of vehicle you have? Where do you keep your vehicle? Where do you live? Where do you work? If you want to get a good used gun for cheap do it.

Not a fan of leaving a firearm in a vehicle overnight. If it’s in my truck during the day and not on me, it’s in a vehicle safe. I live and work in a large metro area which adds to the amount precautions needed.

I would have to say No.

Forming a habit to have it on your person is a better way to go just my opinion.

Whats your address??? Wink

<sarcasm>
...and my truck resides within my locked garage at night and when working from home. Trust me, you won't want to try and penetrate my garage. Wink

But is it secured when you are shopping? At local events? At a friends or family members house? At a sporting event? Or any of the other public places people visit on a daily basis?

I keep a long gun in my vehicle in addition to the handgun I carry on me. I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. An extra handgun in your vehicle is better than nothing. Theft shouldn’t even be a consideration, keep it out of sight and secured and let insurance cover the cost if it’s stolen. No rational person would refuse to have more than one firearm in their home due to increased risk of theft so the vehicle is no different. If you are really worried about theft they sell vehicle “vaults” that provide extra security.

Your situation is not what the OP asked and not one person here is criticizing your solution to your situation. In fact, several posters have suggested your solution.

I hope you can see the difference between leaving a cheap gun in your glove box 24/7 because you can't remember to grab your CCW on the way out the door each day and taking steps to temporarily secure your CCW in something better than a glove box for those times you are unable to keep it on your person. The latter strikes me the plan of a responsible person while the former does not.

I say NO!

But I use to leave a hand gun in the car locked glove box until, it was stolen one night. Happened in a bed room community several miles from Reading, Pennsylvania. Car was locked and had an armed security system, if the glass was broken and door was opened, alarm would raise hell. Car was a'87 MB and the hand gun was a first gen Glock 17 with one full magazine. The front right window was shattered and the perp didn't open the car door to trip the alarm, he just leaned into the car and screw driver the glove box (Fucked it up, too) and took the gun. and other stuff. Reported everything to the Police who came and checked for prints. Got screwed by the insurance company, too.

That happened 25 years ago and I still remember the gun - Glock ser # CX590 and what happened to it. BTW, I never saw the gun again.

I now carry a gun with me to the car, in the car and when I leave the car, it comes home with me.

The bastages smashed the window in the passenger side door of my truck. Ransacked it, the cab looked like a hurricane had gone through.

The only thing that I discovered that they took was the airbag -- I really wish it had blown up in their faces.

It is A Very Good Thing that there was no "truck gun" for them to steal.

There is a rumor going around (I might have had something to do with starting it), that I have two things:
  1. Insomnia

  2. A shotgun
The truck has not been bothered since the day I made a point of cleaning some guns, with the hangar door wide open, so people passing by could see what I was doing.

We're currently getting slammed with an epidemic of stolen guns around here, many of which were stolen from vehicles, with an accompanying uptick in gun-related violent crimes from these stolen firearms that have flooded our streets.

Please, folks... Don't leave guns in your cars.

And especially not in unlocked cars.

If you have to, for whatever reason (can't carry inside work, etc.), lock your doors and get an in-car safe. It's not perfect, but it's better than relying on door locks or pure luck alone.

I don't care if you "live in a good area", or you're "X number of years old and never had anything stolen", or whatever. We hear that all the time from victims. News flash: Bad guys travel and/or your area isn't as good as you think. And you ain't a victim until you are.

Yep. This.

I deal with 5-10 people per week who have a gun stolen from their vehicle.

Yes, I do that and no, I don't 'forget' things often. I can't recall the last time I 'forgot' one of those.

My wife does the exact same thing every morning, except here knife and flashlight reside in the console under her radio in the car.

Trapper189,

Thanks for the correction. I must have recalled someone else’s post for my reply. I actually just went back and read the original post. Man was I off base.

Thanks.

I just bought a new Jeep and ordered an armrest lockable storage insert. I work in healthcare and can’t carry in scrubs but want something for when I leave work. People threaten us all the time...especially when we refuse to write them prescriptions for narcotics.

I am surprised by the number of responses that state something along the lines of "it's only a cheap gun and the insurance will replace it if it gets stolen".

As a number of other people have stated, guns are stolen from vehicles all the time and then traded or sold to criminals. I don't know of any lawsuits yet but I'm sure I'll be reading about someone being sued because they left an unlocked and easily accessible firearm in a vehicle where it was stolen and then used to harm or kill someone.

I have some personal experience with this. In the 1990's I was a reserve deputy and ended up being at a hot call all night. When I was finally released to go home I barely had time to shower and change clothes before I had to go work at my normal job. In my hurry to clean up and get to work I forgot to remove my war bag from the trunk of my car. The car was stolen that day from the parking lot of my employer and the thieves got a backup gun, vest, and a bunch of other stuff. 3 years later the gun was recovered from a gang banger. Based on the condition of the gun when it was recovered it had been fired a significant amount since it had been stolen.

I kicked myself for years for being so stupid as to leave an easily accessed handgun in my car where it could be so easily stolen. I have no idea what that gun was used for but it couldn't have been for anything good. I can only hope that it wasn't used to actually shoot or harm someone.

My belief is that if you have to leave a gun in your vehicle for any reason it should be in a locked container that is difficult to access. Leaving it in a glove box or under the seat is irresponsible.
