Truck/Car/Vehicle Gun. Yea or nae?
I occasionally, I'm old, forget to strap my CC weapon on when driving off. I have been considering stuffing a reliable yet not expensive pistol in the glovebox/console. Comments please.

A gun in the hand is worth more than ten policemen on the phone.

My current employment makes that impossible, but before I worked here, I kept a cheap Mossberg 500 and a box of shells in my trunk.

Not great in a carjacking, but I figured in a SHTF scenario, it might be useful in getting home (or wherever). Best I could do legally in Maryland, anyway.

If you are prone to forgetting to take it, you are also prone to forgetting to secure it in the vehicle. I wouldn't do it

Don't see a problem with that, if you're old you're retired so what an employer wants isn't germane to the situation, correct?

Get you one of those Glock 22 police trade ins for about $300, it would suck if it got gone but no big loss

I have an inexpensive but trustworthy stainless pistol in a car safe locked under the drivers seat with a holster available. Take it out and check it from time-to-time. Keep the doors locked religiously.

Not allowed to carry at work, so that's my compromise.

Keys, Wallet, Phone, flashlight, gun, knife.

Mental checklist where I tap each thing before leaving.

Yes, I do that and no, I don't 'forget' things often. I can't recall the last time I 'forgot' one of those.

I have an AR pistol in the trunk. At $400, the build was comparable in price to a decent handgun , and serves as that get-home gun.

No. Hell no.

We're currently getting slammed with an epidemic of stolen guns around here, many of which were stolen from vehicles, with an accompanying uptick in gun-related violent crimes from these stolen firearms that have flooded our streets.

Please, folks... Don't leave guns in your cars.

And especially not in unlocked cars.

If you have to, for whatever reason (can't carry inside work, etc.), lock your doors and get an in-car safe. It's not perfect, but it's better than relying on door locks or pure luck alone.

I don't care if you "live in a good area", or you're "X number of years old and never had anything stolen", or whatever. We hear that all the time from victims. News flash: Bad guys travel and/or your area isn't as good as you think. And you ain't a victim until you are.

My Glock 17 rides in a zipper case under the drivers seat in my truck and has for many years.

For myself, I'd be irresponsible putting a cheap gun that could be easily stolen, in an unattended vehicle.
I carry on person and there are a number of very capable quality guns under $500 nowadays so price isn't an issue.
I'm also enough of a tightwad that the idea of losing money that keeps me from making it an easy target of thieves.
Having my stolen, poorly secured gun result in harm to an innocent person would weigh heavily on my conscience so I don't want to be that guy.

Please don't leave guns in your cars.

That is the most common way guns are stolen and put in the hands of criminals, not from non background checked sales as some would have you believe.

I would suggest that all of the advice given is with the best of intentions and >>>>> is important and directly applies to those giving it <<<<<<<

What applies in your particular situation may well be different. Ie - a person living way out in the middle of nowhere and whose threat is chiefly bears after their groceries - may have absolutely zero concerns of a local idiot stealing something from the car.

So an answer “don’t do it ever” may or may not be relevant.

Does anybody else do it in your area?
Have there been other things stolen locally from cars recently? Ever?

Where is your residence - urban, suburban, rural?

If it does get stored in your vehicle, do you ever travel to where it would be illegal to have there? In PA what you are thinking of is legal with a concealed carry permit. If I cross into any part of New York I can be arrested.

Will the weapon hold up to long term neglect? Say you forget about it for a few years. Will it still function?

I would talk with local friends that you trust, maybe to include law enforcement, maybe not.

My car/truck gun is always on my person. If I'm at home on the couch, cutting the grass, or grabbing the keys to go out. As a resident of Texas (evidently) there is no reason not to do the same.

The most I would suggest doing is getting a good hard mounted car safe for those times where you're forced to go where you cannot legally carry and the chance of being discovered outweighs wanting self protection on hand.

I have a permit to carry a concealed handgun. The lasts I checked I didn't see a permit to leave a handgun in my car.

I would be very unhappy if I was responsible for putting a firearm in the hands of a bad guy.

I vote no.

And I understand the need maybe for a rifle in a vehicle out in the stix in very remote areas, but to me 99% of "Truck/Car/Vehicle Guns" are someones self justification for buying yet another firearm.

My vehicle gun is my CCW, but if I needed more than my CCW, I'd put the weapon in the car at the beginning of the day, only leave it unattended in rare circumstances, and remove it at the end of the day.
