Bunch of savages in this town |
My son wanted to go shooting, and since we don't currently belong to a private club, we have been going to a local LGS that has an indoor range. Prices aren't too bad. $12/hr per lane, and you buy their ammo. Ammo prices aren't bad either. Usually it is a pretty impressive gun shop. The walls and cabinets are normally well stocked. Yesterday, when we walked in, the counter jockey commented as soon as we walked through the door, "I hope you aren't looking for ammo!". We mentioned we were just there to shoot, but there was NOTHING in the store, except a display case with some black powder pistols, and some very costly engraved, gold plated pistols. The only thing I saw of interest, and it surprised me, was a solo Henry .22 Survival rifle. Other than that, they had a display of generic holsters. But that was it. So we go downstairs to the range. Usually they have a pretty impressive wall of guns you can rent if you wish. But not yesterday, they had sold ALL of them. So we mosey up to the counter, counter guy asks what kind of ammo we need. 9mm, .223, .45. NOPE AND NOPE. The only ammo they had was .22 loose ammo, instead of the usual sealed box, it came in a sandwich bag stapled shut. Although I haven't been to another local shop, I have heard that on weekends, the line is 40-50 deep, and by appointment only if purchasing. Even going one step further, I looked at online shops, and they have nothing either. I've had probably a dozen friends, first time gun shoppers, ask how to go about purchasing a firearm. I pretty much said at this point in the game, their options are extremely limited. I suggested buying online, and using a local FFL, but even that seems remotely possible. One of my neighbors asked if I would be willing to sell anything, but honestly I don't have anything since that tragic boating incident. She ended up finding a .380, and her husband got a .22 of some type. But she couldn't find ammo, so I gave her 12rds, two mags worth. ----------------- I apologize now...

We still have a couple that have ammo. There are a few that don’t have anything common left. Our biggest one is absolutely barren when it come to handguns. I’ve never seen them this low on stock. The LGS here in Belton, Loves Guns went out of business in March. In Temple, Hawkeyes, was broken into and had over 15 guns stolen in April....they have very little stock as most they do is indoor range and training. Weber’s Guns is doing well, but they are out of most ammo or there is a limit. But their prices have always been high so most people don’t buy ammo there. Walmart quit selling ammo. I went to Killeen two weeks or so ago and they had four glocks in stock, several single action revolvers, ten or so long guns and only ammo the had was45 Colt and 410 and 20 ga....no 9mm, no 22, no 45, no 44, nada. I ran out of small pistol primers and can’t find any...anywhere. I thought I had a case 5000 of them but the box was empty when I pulled it off the shelf. When this shit settles down I will replace them. But I don’t have any empty cases because I loaded all my ammo up at the beginning of this thing and I could run a really good gunfight for a few hours to a day with what I have...so I’m not too worried. So let it be written, so let it be done... |
Our LGS actually had some P365XL's and some S&W AR's in stock. They also had some pistol ammo available. You can also get most items on Gun Broker - however new Glock 19 Gen 5's are going for about $750 - $850, good used G19's for around $650. 'veritas non verba magistri'

My local shop is actually pretty full of product. They are on seriously reduced hours, 7 or so hours a week for normal shopping and transactions, with a very small headcount allowed in. I put money down on a nib Valmet.

Not much different at the LGS here. As for myself (FFL/SOT)... I have standing orders for about 10-12 firearms as soon as they hit the distributors. The big distributors shelves are just as empty as the LGS are. I mean *nothing*. Maybe some bore snakes and misc crap. "Attack life, it's going to kill you anyway." Steve McQueen...

The two stores I go to mostly are pretty dry on semi auto rifles and handguns. Lots of revolvers in stock though. The used guns are pretty much gone too. I did go to one the day after they got a truck and inventory was pretty good on guns that day including EBRs. I got in line to shoot and the guy in front of me was trying to get some ammo and was told they had no 9mm at all in the store so he had to go home. It was a Sunday and the range was about 3/4 full. “Everybody wants a Sig in the sheets but a Glock on the streets.” -bionic218 04-02-2014

They look like Soviet-era supermarkets with bare shelves and long lines ... people standing in line in 110 deg. heat to get in and scrounge for scraps. Depressing.

I helped my boss buy new Gen 4 Glock 17 today...right at $500 on GB, found a local shop with a meager $15 transfer fee. The shop actually had a Gen 5 17 and Glock 45 in stock at $559, but he was happy with the Gen 4 deal. This message has been edited. I can tell you from looking at the wholesalers that a lot of these gun and ammo shortages aren't going to let up for a bit. Very little available to buy and still moderate shipping delays. I would be worry about gun stores closing up because they're not going to have much to sell for a while.

No ethanol! |
I'm p/t at one. We've sold out of 00 buck, .380, and 9mm except to allow a box when buying a gun. Have limited amounts in most other defense calibers. Shelves are under stocked but owner finds some inventory hitting distributors and we get what we can, not what the calls are for. Sales and calls still exceed what we can find even as customers buy substitutes. Have not seen 18" home 12ga since the first weekend of trouble. It's a game of whack-a-mole to find stock. Be patient, some of this is going to take quite a while to replenish. ------------------ The plural of anecdote is not data. -Frank Kotsonis

Quit staring at my wife's Butt |
My local shop has a few guns but they are the odd left over. There was a woman about 70 plus years old buying a Glock, I don't think she had any clue what she was doing as the salesman was explaining to her about practice ammo. he was telling her she needed to take the gun out a fire a few rounds thru it to get use to what it's like shooting a firearm. She had this confused look on her face and asked the salesman to just load the gun for her with bullets that she could protect herself with and she just take it that way.

Stopped by my old shop. Magpul parts trickling in, stocks back in stock. Plenty of PMAGs, Glock mags, not so much. Pistol cases bare except for one G20, and single-stack $1k+ pistols (SIG 210, STIs, etc). Just received 2 Gen5 G19s, but didn't expect those to last till the end of the week. Bare rifle pegs on the wall. Normally 40+ ARs in different configurations were reduced to 1 Noveske 9mm 16", 2 AR pistols, and 3 sub-$1K 5.56 rifles. Only high-end lowers left (no andersons, or aeros), no stripped uppers at all. I actually brought in 5 stripped uppers back to the shop a couple weeks ago, just to give them something to sell. No 5.56 or .223 except for some 5.56 M855 that was belted with tracers. Some 9mm FMJ and 147 defensive (more than any other store I've seen in the last two weeks). I checked the que for backgrounds 4800+ entries long. Each of those entries represents one background check. Multiple guns can be purchased on a single background check, but each check represents an attempt to transfer at least one gun. 4800+ doesn't necessarily accurately represent separate individuals (i.e. you can buy one gun at one store and another at a different store and still be the same person), but it does give a rough idea of demand. After Sandy Hook, the max was about 600 in the que. I've never seen it this long in all the years I've been in this state. Oregon is an instant-check state. But, if your name matches or partially matches someone with a record, a human has to look at the record and verify that you are or aren't the person with the record. So, right now, there is a de-facto waiting period of 7-8 days because that is how long it's taking our state police to manually check purchasers. I spoke with the manager (we used to be co-workers) who told me that next allocation of 9mm FMJ and 5.56 we're getting is in November. That doesn't mean we won't get more ammo, it just means our next guaranteed shipment is in November. He told me that our industry partners are telling us to expect this to be the new status quo until past the election.

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
Locally there are some guns....local place actually had some Bertta 92s and XDs...but very little selection. Still some M1As and lever actions on the long gun racks, but not much else of interest. I keep waiting for them to drop the prices on the M1As just to move them, since they're not selling anything else due to no supply, but they havent budged yet. No Ammo...absolutely none, except for 22lr. Reloading supplies are also gone...no primers, powder, or projectiles. I'm in pretty good shape for loaded ammo now, but I'm about out of primers and no clue when I'll be able to find more.

Our shop: Handguns: almost no selection unless your budget is over $1200 per handgun. Sub $1200: pretty slim pickings but we have some 92s. From S&W a few J-frames, a couple of 500s, two different 460s and a handful of odd M&P options. No Glock, no SIG, no Springfield, no Walther, no HK at ANY price point, no CZ, no Canik, a few Kimber Micros in stupid colors. No Ruger except one LCR, a couple of lightweight 22/45s and an American Pistol in .45ACP. No FNH, no Bersa, no Taurus, no Browning, no Colt. ARs and other 'blankety-blank evil yada-yada gummunt should ban em blah-blah' rifles and pistols: we just had a batch of S&W Sport IIs in two flavors fly in and out. Another SCAR 20S in, a couple of BREN pistols in 7.62x39. A PWS AR-10. A couple of 10/22s (yes, WA State considers semi-auto 22s "assault rifles"), S&W 15-22, a CMMG 9mm carbine, one Mini-14. Solitary Mini-30. Not much of anything else. Tactical/HD Shotguns: I'm joking, right? What tactical shotguns? No pump shotguns of ANY type. Ammo-wise, no 9mm of any kind. No 5.56x45 or .223 of any kind. No 300BLK of any kind. No buckshot of any kind. Some slugs, but only in 12GA. Almost no .308, unless someone wants any of that bimetal steel core junk out of Germany. 30-06 is almost as bad. Almost no .38SPC left, no .380 left. Some 7.62x39. Plenty of 6.5CDMR, though. Almost all out of .22WMR, .17HMR. Some .22LR, though. A few stripped lowers in both AR-10 and AR-15. No uppers however. A few buffer tubes, but only for AR-10. No charging handles. No Magpul anything. No LPKs. No UPKs. No furniture. No barrels. No BCGs. No gas blocks. No gas tubes. No triggers. No open sights. No 30mm 1-pc mounts. No Aimpoint. One RMR left. Minimal alternative red dots. Some tactical scopes. No slings. No bipods. No Lancer mags. No M3-gen PMAGs in 5.56. Lots of crap-shoot Hexmags. We did finally get a resupply of cleaning fluids and gun oils. And bore snakes. Woo-hoo. Out of soft rifle and shotgun cases, though. And not a Uplula of any kind to be found. No protective eyewear, but we at long last got some earmuffs in. -MG

Optimistic Cynic |
I live inside the DC beltway, this notion of a LGS is pretty much foreign to me. The one (1) gun store in Arlington requires an appointment, made days in advance, to even enter the store. Yes, there are a few in the outer suburbs, but these are hardly "local," and I suspect they are in even worse shape. Of course, guns are banned in DC, and you pretty much have to invite your lawyer along if you want to buy anything at a gun store in MD. For those of you bemoaning the "current situation" realize that we who live in the DC area have been humiliated by this reality for decades.
