Now that’s funny, I don’t care who ya are! Yeah, Mt St. Helens if ya want but no need to go further north up I-5. “People have to really suffer before they can risk doing what they love.” –Chuck Palahnuik Be harder to kill: https://preparefit.ck.page

the 2 towns near me have festivals in August. There's a tractor pull and BBQ in Banks, and a Garlic Festival in North Plains. Further south there's a balloon fest in Albany. Personally, I'd avoid the Indian Casinos except unless you like to smoke and waste your money. Multnomah falls is a must see IMHO. Even post fire. But if you go, you should go early or you will have a parking NIGHTMARE. .

Funny you posted this Dave. My now wife and I are headed to Oregon for 9 days in mid June for our honeymoon. You guys who know more about Oregon, please feel free to critique our plans. Fly into Portland spend one night Drive out to Multnomah Falls then into Bend, spending 2 nights in Bend because of the Bite of Bend food festival Cruise over to Crater Lake possibly spend the night there or keep going West out to the coast. Spend 4 days working our way back to the coast to Portland. Stopping in Coos Bay to go fishing and crabbing, and definitely spending some time in the Willamette Valley drinking wine. Then last 2 nights in Portland.

re: Ox190:
My solicited opinion: A+ good luck on the 'stay the night' at Crater Lake...unless you camp out or have reservations, the season is usually well packed a year in advance for rooms at the Lake. Used to be considerable places within an hour or so, don't know these days. Good plan otherwise. Enjoy!!! **************~~~~~~~~~~ "I've been on this rock too long to bother with these liars any more." ~SIGforum advisor~ "When the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, then change will come."~~sigmonkey

That sounds like a very good time and road trip. I've done similar drives every year when we go out there to visit family. Love the Oregon coast and up to the Hood Canal area that I grew up in.

Well due to the timing on the fishing trip we'll now spend a couple of hours at Crater Lake and then off to the coast. Planning on driving almost the entire Oregon coast on the 101.

One note about Multnomah Falls... I've heard that post fire, parking is a big issue since some of the older lots along the old road are closed now. Plan on getting there early. .

I travel to that part of WA semi often and over the past 7 years the decline of Olympia is shocking, even for a leftist state capital. It's a dump. Last couple of times I haven't bothered to go downtown for some of the good food they had, simply isn't worth the trouble or risk with the tweakers / homeless / beggars / etc. Think a mini-San Fran in the making.

the reality is parking at the Falls is ALWAYS tight during tourist season. Inquiry to either DOT or whichever agency operates the site currently may give current information. Typically in the past, earlier in the day is less crowded, while later is worse. And for my own taste, if the parking lot is actually FULL take that as hint how the walk-about viewing area will be. If the lower falls area is open for viewing, most don't choose the steep trail to the top anyway. At one point years ago, a real treat from the snack shop, was a 'smoked salmon salad sandwich'. At the time it really WAS good. **************~~~~~~~~~~ "I've been on this rock too long to bother with these liars any more." ~SIGforum advisor~ "When the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, then change will come."~~sigmonkey

I was fortunate enough to be driving past in late March and stopped for an hour. Very beautiful and worth seeing, even when it was raining out.

We got to Multnomah fairly early on Saturday and had no issues parking. We actually stopped at Bridal Veil Falls and made the short hike into it first. Then we went to the Bonneville Dam and Fish Hatchery. Hood River was beautiful as well. Got to Bend and hung out around there for 2 days. Beautiful little town. Drove up to Sparks Lake and regretted not having a fishing pole. Drove to Crater Lake today, breathtaking. Highly recommend it. Made it to Coos Bay this evening, going Ling Cod fishing in the morning then continuing up the coast to Astoria. Plan on taking our time. I wish I could have fit in some time playing/fishing along the Rogue River.

Ox190 - if you can get over and see the Oregon Caves well worth it. - if you make it back to Portland / Salem area, Go to Silver Falls State Park! Take the long hike to 9 waterfalls! you won't regret it. It is better than Multhnoma falls IMHO - the Oregon coast is nice, but mostly just a drive, the ocean is too cold to swim in. GO HERE on the Coast, Take the lighthouse tour! Stick your head in a 2nd Order fresnel lense! - http://www.oregon.com/attracti...qua-river-lighthouse __________________________ My door is always open to Sigforum members, and I'm always willing to help if I can.
