Yep. Early in my career, when Tasers were first becoming widespread, there was a rash of incidents like this across the country.

At the time, some OC sprays were alcohol-based.

Alcohol-based OC spray (or hand sanitizer) + Taser arcing = Human Torch

It did not look good when the cops left the room with the guy on fire. Some basic skills were missing here. With no audio it is hard to say what was going on with this guy.

Yeah, it was a thing, had at least one case happen nearby in a municipal agency. At the time the then Sheriff didn't go for Tasers, so we were still doing the Mag-lite beatdown.

I'm assuming he doused himself with the hand sanitizer to make himself slimy and hard to use empty-hand controls on.

I guess the takeaway here is don't be a criminal and a germaphobe.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Problem is the cops are in NY, luckily the perp is white. If he wasn’t they’d be screwed worse.

There was another similar story in another state only a few days before or after this one. I remember discussing it at the time, reading about it thinking they got the facts wrong, only to find there were two separate incidents.

Here's the link from Oct 27, 2001:

The story in the OP from the link above was a different incident. On Nov 6 I posted this from Catskill (same city as this thread):

And when they came back, they weren't carrying a fire extinguisher.

Basic skills involve smothering with a blanket which should be handy in a police station. BTW the guy died about two months later in the hospital. If no blanket certainly a fire extinguisher which is mandatory at the station.
