My latest experience with the ATF as an FFL - latest audit
I’m a home based FFL, been one since 2010 and have done business with forum members. The ATF can audit yearly but it ends up being about every three years in my area.

I have had four audits since I’ve had my license with my last audit being yesterday. Two of the IOI’s (what the ATF employees are called who do the audits) were good and two have been less than personable.

So to my point, yesterday my audit was completed and I give the IOI an “A” rating. He was thorough yet courteous and helpful. He found four minor issues that he could have held against me, yet he just let me correct them while he was there.

Perhaps some FFLs are being revoked, but my experience was a good one and what I’d expect from the ATF. Kudos to those guys out of the Houston office.

Just wanted to share a real life experience as opposed to what is being spread online.

I suspect that there are both good apples and bad apples, like any profession. I have a good friend that lateraled to ATF from another agency that is a gun collector including NFA items. He was very open about targeting criminals, not citizens. He is retired now but I have zero doubts he never compromised or violated his oath. I’m glad you got a good apple.

I’m sure there are bad apples but at least it’s not an organization wide attempt to shut down FFLs with zero tolerance (as some stories have suggested).

Glad to hear this mrvmax, the folks I have met at HTown ATF have been reasonable and professional.

Seeing you are in Friendswood, do you sell UZI items?

A thing that most people don’t get is that DOJ’s new “zero tolerance” policy has not went exactly as planned. DOJ expected no one to fight revocation.

Initially, it was working as planned. A bunch of FFLs got revoked over minor transgressions and relinquished their licenses. And the court battles started. DOJ can say what they want, but they aren’t fairing well once the allegations get in front of judges. Most if not all awarding legal fees and damages as well.

And it’s also come at a high cost to ATF in the terms of money and resources. They have even lost local officers assigned to task forces over it.

I have never worked with an ATF agent or supervisor that weren’t great guys doing the right thing. If I had a complaint, it would be some are really, really lazy.

This is very nice to hear. I'm in Cali and maybe the agents here get ridden hard to find violations. The FFL I worked with lately is sweating bullets not to miss any possible infraction, however small.
