Japanese chopsticks (of which there are good and bad ones) are perhaps better suited for some of the more delicate aspects of Japanese cuisine. May not be necessary or even advocated for something like Chinese food. Chinese style chopsticks may be better suited for Chinese food in general. Not to say that Japanese chopsticks can't be used with Chinese food (most everyday home Japanese food is not delicate) - I do as almost all chopsticks in my house are Japanese style (except for Chinese and Korean style chopsticks I've received as gifts).

Sounds like you're trying too hard. The trick isn't more pressure, but better balance of the food on the pressure points.
Picking up peanuts is all about balance and "just enough" pressure to keep them from "jumping off"

Regarding Japanese style, I prefer designs where the tips touch when the pair is side by side; no gap at the tips as shown in the pic. I’m curious about the Korean design - they lay flat on the table but are horrible to use. Also, my understanding is that they use silver historically to detect poisons (arsenic?). But modern times: really? My silver Korean chopsticks look nice but never get used.

No, I meant they cut into bite size but don’t cut all the way through. The pieces remain connected.

I didn't realize that was a "design", so much as a production expediency with the break apart chopstick you find at take-out places. I've never seen that style at a Fine Dinning establishment.
My understanding is that if a piece, being picked up, was so thin that the chopstick needed to touch each other, the angle of the stick , due to how they are held, would cause the edges of the tips to touch...to pinch

darthfusterMrs DF is of Japanese heritage. We have a drawer dedicated to chopsticks (hashi, iirc). I only use one at a time and only to clear the sink strainer of bits and stir my chocolate milk.

a1abdjAll I know is that while some of you guys are trying to figure out which set of chopsticks to use and how to properly balance peanuts on them, I have completed my meal because I used a fork/spoon/knife.
One of these days I'm going to walk into a Panda Express, trip over a pair of shoes left at the door, and see one of you guys sitting on the floor in a Kimono eating your orange chicken with a set of twigs.

Not a fan of Korean chopsticks, but the spoons are awesome. I bought a set, and it's what I use the most at home.

Same here. When doing such things, my family looks at me like I'm cracked.

scot818I just saw this and had to laugh. Night before last the wife and started watching the show Billions on Amazon. In the first episode the US attorneys are sitting around a table eating Chinese food out of the box with chop sticks. I stopped the show and went on a short rant about how I hate this in tv shows. I don’t know anyone that eats that way.
But the thing that really gets on my nerves with actors - is the way they “over chew” when they eat. Smacking their lips and trying to talk in a dramatic fashion. I just want to slap the shit out of their mouth and say chew with your mouth SHUT! And don’t talk with food in your mouth - don’t you have any manners?
