Hortonville business gives employees handguns for Christmas

HORTONVILLE - A local business that produces glassware embedded with bullets recently decided to give every employee a handgun as a Christmas present.

Ben Wolfgram, who co-owns Hortonville-based BenShot, said the decision to give employees handguns as a gift was made as part of an effort to promote personal safety and team building.

The business has 16 full-time employees, including several military veterans. But the business also had employees who had never fired a gun before, Wolfgram said.

This is the first time the business has done anything like this, Wolfgram said. The business was started in a small garage workshop in 2015.

Most employees were excited at the prospect of receiving their handgun, Wolfgram said. Chelsea Priest, an employee, said she felt empowered by the gift, which she believes will help keep her safe.

“I've never been a part of anything like this,” she said.

At least two employees initially declined the gift, but are considering accepting it after taking a gun safety course the business had employees take before getting their guns, Wolfgram said.

The national debate about guns was thrust back into the spotlight recently after the Oct. 27 shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue and the Nov. 7 shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California.

Only two months ago, a gunman wounded four of his coworkers at a software company in Middleton before he was shot and killed by police.

Wolfgram said he wasn't worried about workplace violence because his business has a small staff and all of the employees know each other well.

“For us, now, we have an entire armed staff,” he said. “I think that’s pretty good.”

Should have named his company BeenShot.

Since I prefer Bulliet bourbon, I'll be ordering from BenShot, to promote his agenda.

I remember us talking about this company a year or so ago. I was tempted to buy then but never did. This time though I did buy some of their products. I got a nice pint glass with a .50 BMG round for my father-in-law in France for a Christmas present. It'll go perfectly with the .50 BMG bottle opener I got him last year.

I also got a four set of shot glasses to give to my brother, brother-in-law, and father for Thanksgiving. One will be for me. Smile

I received one of the rocks glasses for my birthday last year. It's pretty cool but I do always worry about breaking it. It's more of a conversation piece than anything.
