Got a Huawei Mate 9 or something like that. Not the cheapest available down here but I heard the board bad-mouth Samsung enough to look elsewhere. Been screwed by iPhone several times so I dived into the Android world.

My phone works fine but I just learned that the commercial war has reached both Giants and no more Android updates or Google Play store for Huawei.

Should I get rid of the phone? Wait and see....? Are there precedents of something similar?

No need to ditch the phone IMO. Huawei is an enormous company, and one of the biggest cellphone makers in the world. According to our CIA/FBI whatever department, the Chinese have used Huawei and its devices to spy here in the US. Not sure how much of that I believe, but your mileage may vary. Huawei makes very nice products, so I wouldn't worry about replacing the phone you have any time soon.

Nicky,

Not sure where you've heard that news about Google and Huawai. When is this supposed to happen?

I've an Huawai Honor 7X that I bought in January 2018. Really like it. Was updated OTA from Nougut to Oreo a year ago. It is still getting monthly Google security update patches. Last was just 2 days ago.

Okay I did some searching and found reports earlier today where Google suspended some business in response to the Trump Administration blacklisting the Chinese firm.

--Huawei Technologies will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system.
--The next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app.
--Details of the specific services were still being discussed internally at Google, according to the source.
--Huawei will continue to have access to the version of the Android operating system available through the open source license that is freely open to anyone who wishes to use it.

But Google will stop providing any technical support and collaboration for Android and Google services to Huawei going forward

Guess I won't be getting any more security updates based on Google feeding Huawei. Wonder if Huawei will deploy their own substitute.

https://www.theverge.com/2019/...i-android-suspension

Following the US crackdown on Chinese technology companies, Google has cut off Huawei’s Android license, dealing a huge blow to the besieged phonemaker. Reuters first reported the news, and The Verge subsequently confirmed Google’s suspension of business with Huawei with a source familiar with the matter.

Reached for comment, a Google spokesperson said only “We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications.” The order, in this case, appears to be the US Chamber of Commerce’s recent decision to place Huawei on the “Entity List,” which as Reuters reports is a list of companies that are unable to buy technology from US companies without government approval.

Huawei is now restricted to using the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), cutting the company off from critical Google apps and services that consumers outside of China expect on Android devices. That also means Huawei will only be able to push security updates for Android once they’re made available in AOSP, assuming the company uses its own update system. It’s not clear yet how this will affect the full range of Android integrations that Huawei depends on, but we will update this story when we receive additional clarification about the impacts of Google’s decision.

Edited To Add: You beat me to it.

Not so worried about the OS updates as much as geting kicked out of Google Play.

Had terrible luck with my iPhones. First was a hand me down that got me hooked. But the thing was to old to run current apps. So I got a 3s that I bought from a tourist and allegedly was unlocked. No such luck. It was available for unlocking IF just someone could provide the ORIGINAL chip. No such luck. Ran for a 4s, almost new.
Shortly an update killed the wifi and made it an autistic phone. No support down here.
The 5s lasted two years before it moved to a drawer. I was done with iPhones. Welcome current Huawei.

Now I fear my love story with android might be over.

I think there are a number of us here who are happy with current Samsung. I came from a long line of Nexuses then Samsung. Not too bad. Phone (S7 edge) has been very reliable and no issue. Daughter uses the Note 9. Girlfriend uses S8 Plus. All happy.

My next phone will be the Pixel 4 XL however. Gotta get on the Google camera train.

If you do opt swap out your Huawei phone, consider getting one of the new Google Pixel 3a phones. Great reviews and a whole lotta capability for $399 US. And a number of carriers are offering rebates of up to $100 on them so you might could get one for $299. And best of all, you'll always be first in line for all Google apps and content updates.

Just checked if the Pixel 3a is available down here. None found.
The 3 sells around $1000... Obviously, no support, parts or service Since it's a unknown device down these parts

The Pixel 3a is brand new. It was just released last week, so you may need to wait a bit to see it show up in your area. It really does look like a great phone option though.

Are there other Android phones out there? It's hard to imagine a market that size with only one Android phone maker.

But anything's possible. You've surprised me now and again with the reality on the ground in BA.

But an Android phone frozen in time (no bug fixes, no security updates) and without Google Play support (that's the only way I've ever gotten apps on my Androids!?!?!) would be a non-starter for me. Fancy camera or screen or great battery life wouldn't get past those fatal flaws, IMO.

I am a big fan of my OnePlus 6. Thinking about getting OnePlus 7 Pro, but may wait as my phone does everything I want, and I am not a fan of edge to edge or curved screens.

OnePlus 6 $550 128gb, $600 256gb

Ordering is done direct from manufacture to customer, so the only restrictions is if they have the same bands availiable to what you use there, and if they are allowed to be imported.

Though OnePlus is not importing it into the US market, he may be able to get a hold of the brand new OnePlus 7 which they claim will retail for around $499 US. And that phone has all the same internals as the Pro, but with a flat, non-rounded, 1080 screen and a teardrop camera.

Motorola Moto-series phones appear to be available in Argentina. I don't know how they are, now, but they were still ok devices at the time I switched to iStuff a couple years ago.

(Actually, they used to be darn nice--until Google sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo.)

Last years G6 and this years G7 phones both have received very good reviews, and both run a version of almost virgin Android (i.e. no heavy manufacturer skin). The only place they trail behind is in the quality of their cameras, but that's to be expected in a $300 cellphone.

They still are, and they have the best radios/antennas in the business, supposedly, which is important in weak reception areas like the one I live in. I've been using Motorola for quite some time (Razr->Z3 Play) and not much is different since they were sold to Google and then Google sold them to Lenovo, other than the brand imagery that plays when the beasties are powered on.

Also, the Moto mods that fit cross-model on many of the current Motorola phones are very useful - some include a 10-hr battery. I now have three of them (two battery-only and one with JBL speakers) and never run out of batteries. Smile

I bought a moto x4 for a cheap work phone ($250) and it's better than my Z2 Force.
