I'm a white guy, but, back when I still had a full head of hair it was very curly. For a number of years I sported a haircut that was not unlike a classical Afro. It was not uncomfortable in hot weather at all. Think "flow-through ventilation" Smile

The main disadvantage to a 'fro is you can't wear a hat w/o getting a serious case of hat hair

(I don't have that problem anymore.)

Similar here. Grew it out to almost 8" in college. It was tight curly, so it stayed short looking. Could tease it out to a full 'fro but only did that once.

Keep nice & short now.

Any long hair, regardless of volume, will make for miserable time in hot/humid days. Reason why most gals will put their hair up in some form or, another.

I understand the reason for tall cowboy hats is to insulate the head from hot weather. I suspect that tall hair would do the same thing.

Back when I had hair I had a blonde afro for a long time.

It was actually fairly cool in hot weather.

Yup. The hair keeps the sun off your head but air flows through, cooling.

I've never wondered much about Afros, but I do wonder how much time is required to maintain those dreadlocks, especially females who have very long ones. How often do they undo them to wash their hair?

A lot of those long dreadlocks are fake hair extensions, and not the persons real hair.

Fake or not, the hair color is still black, and brings in more heat like wearing a black shirt in the sun.

I don't have the hair for that (I don't have much hair anymore really....) Back when I wore a mullet (standard New England hockey mullet, nothing crazy like a Camaro cut or a mini-truck mullet) my head stayed cool. Now with a hat on a lot and less hair my head seems hotter.

But thinking back to my youth, who wore it better?

Mr. Cotter?

Juan Epstein?

...or Arnold Horshack?
