I had a family of them rampaging through my kitchen pantry last year. I found some newer style traps at Ace Hardware that work a LOT better than the old snap type Victors (I think these are also made by Victor, but a newer design). Instead of a snap they use a spring-loaded guillotine. It doesn't decapitate them, it just breaks their necks. Peanut butter for bait. It took about 5 days to get them all.

If none of the other stuff works, use a thermal imager and a 22.

I made my own variation on that bucket trap a couple months ago, and managed to trap and poison the family of eight field mice that had decided to move into my garage as the weather was turning colder. Worked amazingly well, in just two days. Seems like once you catch one, it attracts all the others in short order.
Trapping them in a bucket before tossing a block of poison bait in the bottom of it and then disposing of the bodies cleanly is way better than simply leaving poison laying about for them to eat and then crawl away into your walls to die and stink up the place for days/weeks.

By now you've been inundated with choices. Without going into detail about why I don't like a few of the options, I'll just say I'm still a fan of the old wooden-based spring traps, Victor by preference. Properly adjusted and with the right bait, I have never had them fail. I might get a particularly clever one from time to time that will rob my bait and get away with it, but I always win in the end.
Those who say to use peanut butter are on the right track, but they don't take it far enough. Crafty mice can lick the peanut butter off without springing the trap. My killer bait is a combination of some sort of chocolate-covered caramel or nougat pressed and formed onto the little metal trip tray, and then a dab of peanut butter on top. The peanut butter attracts them, they lick it off, then have to get more aggressive to get the chocolate and caramel. You can guess where that leads.

Any chance that what you’re hearing in the exterior walls is actually bats? I know you said someone caught some mice also, but could it be both? I’ve heard bats in the walls that I wondered if they were mice too. Until they got into the house!

Nix on the bats, no way.
Two thumbs up on the Victor traps, Re: hearing things
The neighbor across the street has two dogs that bark as long and as loud as they want to , Regardless of the tiny town ordnances. No amount of communication will will solve that .
The high school finally agreed to turn the volume down at the football games , Very tolerable, thank God.
Picking and planting seasons are particularly abusive with giant machinery zooming past , 40 feet from the Apt , But that's only 3 1/2- 4 months out out of the year.
For some reason the day care kids don't bother me in the least, six or 8 indians on the warpath between 8:00 and 6:00 .
14 trains per day blowing their horns at three intersections are only thoroughly annoying when the windows are wide open.
