just shut the thing totally off

There are things i like to do on my phone that don't require any connection to a network.

Listen to saved podcasts.
Listen to music.
Play games.
Read emails
Compose emails to send later

I think you question is flawed - I'd bet very few people choose airplane mode. Rather, they are required to use it, say on an Airplane Smile

I also use airplane mode when hunting so I can have an alarm and see what time it is when I wake up in the middle of the night. No electricity where we camp so the charge has to last 5-7 days. There's also no signal where we camp so it drains the battery quickly while searching for service if not on airplane mode.

I like airplane mode on my kindle when I have a library ebook loan that goes past it's due date. I can try to finish the book w/o blocking the next person in the library queue.

In addition what others have posted, I use airplane mode on one of the two card games I have on my iPhone. It cuts down ads by 75%.

I'm similar to bendable--my flip phone is used only to make calls. I don't "text" and don't give out the number to anyone. Nevertheless, I do understand why someone might use "airplane mode" on their smart phone--those devices do more than make calls and surf the Internet.

i.i.u.c.:

the sending of signals from your phone uses much more battery .

so if you do not need to call out text out or receive calls or texts ,
you automatically extend your battery life , considerably.

but you can still
play games and listen to music

Required when flying. Much easier to put in airplane mode so when you land it instantly reconnects when you turn off airplane mode.

And you can use it for music, reading, playing games...whatever while it's in airplane mode.

I only have mine out of airplane mode when i leave the house. I have wifi calling activated so my phone is still working just fine.

Since a phone out of airplane mode is ALWAYS communicating with cell towers, even when its not on a call, it is pumping out microwave radiation I don't want to be exposed to. That leaves me being exposed to just wifi and bluetooth which is said to be the lesser of the evils of cellphone radiation.

Phones also use more power while communicating with more distance cells so that exposes you to more radiation in addition to the faster draining of the battery.

I think that it's rather comical that they think everyone on the plane turns their phone off or onto airplane mode.

It's a good thing everyone does, right? Otherwise, planes would be falling out of the sky! Roll Eyes

Just last week I sat and watched as the stewardess, while taxiing, taking off, and getting to altitude, sat on her ass in the jump seat, texting away with whoever. Meanwhile, all of the schmucks are supposed turn off the phones. Roll Eyes

It's a sham.

Your device will charge much faster if you turn on airplane mode while it's charging.
