So my whole life I always built my own computers from scratch. As time went by and technology evolved so fast I couldn’t keep up so the last time I upgraded the motherboard and things in my personal computer, I had a local shop do it. I have a computer with 5 hard drives as I keep only the operating system on one drive, and then separate media, documents, backups, and other things on other drives. I also back up online. That last upgrade was about 10 years ago.

My computer got to the point it was literally taking 30 minutes for it to boot up and load everything to a point it was usable. Also my graphics card was dated to use with Photoshop or video production software.

I decided to upgrade every single thing in the case again except for the extra hard drives. I upgraded the local C: drive to a 2TB SSD and was shocked to see they now look like a memory stick. I upgraded the power supply, motherboard, memory, video card, CPU, etc.

My computer now boots up to a useable state in one minute. I love it. We will see how long this lasts. Now I am in the process of reinstalling everything I want and need as I wanted a total fresh operating system install. I had to go with Windows 11 as a major program I use will no longer be supported by Windows 10, which I had.

No real point to this post other than the obvious that things change so much so quickly with technology. This computer should be good for at least the next 10 years.

I still miss Windows 95 where you can switch between Windows and MS-DOS. Those systems had some GREAT games.

Ha! I remember 5.25” floppy disks and then they improved to 3.5” discs.

I still remember my fancy 1200 baud modem.

For $30 you can get another year of Win10 updates.
I know, $30 is out of reach for some of us, but it's an option.

One of my builds still has the 3.5" because I don't have something to replace the hole if I remove it from the case. Smile

My dad was a programmer for IBM and we had a computer way before most people did. My brother went on to be a programmer, but I only saw it for the available game which was a text only game. I forget the name of it, but it was basically that you came to a fork in the road and which way do you go, etc.

I keep up with hardware but I too haven't built a PC in quite a while, I'm migrating to Linux as I have the last generation of hardware that can't run windows 11.

I am also that way with my DVD drive in the computer. I had a RAID expansion card to have my DVD drive plus and extra hard drive, but they could not get it to work so I lost both, but I left both in there. If I truly need one of them, I can disconnect something and plug one of them in. It seems the card was not compatible with Windows 11.

Adventure was the game. Originally created on an IBM Mainframe.
I spent many hours playing that game way back when.

Ha that’s it. I loved it and spent forever playing it. My brother could have cared less and wanted to learn how to make things like that, which is why he went on the path he did.

I received notice that support for my Quicken software would no longer be supported on Windows 10. They did not offer any extension options.

Interesting. I checked Update and Security on my laptop and it offered me the option to enroll. I was prompted to sign in and Microsoft sent me a security code via email. Once I entered this code, I received message on my screen that I was enrolled in these updates at no extra cost.

Now in the upper right hand corner of my Windows Update screen, it says "Your PC is enrolled to get Extended Security Updates."

Interesting. Thanks for that as I will go do that for my mom’s computer this weekend.

It's good through Oct. 13, 2026.
(only critical/security, not any enhancements, features or anything else.)

O-365 will be supported on Windows 10 into 2028.

Much of this equipment and devices will become more virtualized as the technology progresses, probably in the same way that so much of commercial computing already has.

Don't forget the CD reader/writer. How else is he going to read that stack of CD's he wrote back in the day?

Quicken said it would still function, but security updates would end 10/14/2025 for Windows 10. I always hate upgrading. I am glad I keep a list of the software keys for all of my programs as I have been able to re-install all I had without having to buy the newer version. I also keep a copy of my original software download in case I need to re-install like now. I re-downloaded Office 365 as I get that for free thank goodness.
