Brother-in-Law, who has lived with us for most of the last 40 years, applied for Rent Assisted Housing this Spring. At the time, he was Number 14 on the list and we expected it to be at least a year before an apartment came open for him.

Much to our surprise, they called him a couple of weeks ago and said he could move in November 1st!

We went over this afternoon and walked through the apartment, signed the lease, paid the deposit and first month and now he's fierce to get moved. He doesn't have a lot, basically a bed, desk, TV and Nintendo, recliner and clothes and such. We put together a care package of basic kitchen supplies and he/we will hit Goodwill and/or Salvation Army for some basic furniture.

It'll be his first time ever out on his own at 65 years of age. We'll keep an eye on him and make sure he gets settled in to a routine. Once he has a routine established, he's fine. Plus he has friends within walking distance of his new apartment, so they'll help him out too.

That is great to hear! My youngest brother who is mentally handicapped was able to get into an assisted home about 5 years ago. Not that he was ever any problem or bother but the difference in him having some “ independence “ is amazing. I’m not sure your B-in-laws state but sometimes a little independence is all that’s need to really thrive. I wis Lhasa we could have made it happen a lot earlier but there was nothing available. Hopefully your outcome will be as positive as what ours was.

He worked for many years until the cannery shut down. He drives and has bought and paid for several vehicles over the years.

He's 90% independent, just needs a little help with new tasks until he gets used to them.

My handicapped BIL used to live in a group home, did OK there, but when his Dad died he got his house that he grew up in. Man, did he flourish!! Got a job at our local Wegman's, been there about 22 years and doing well!! His Mom helps him sort out the finances, and my other BIL and his sister( my wife) and I all help him out when needed, which , I'm proud to say is less and less!! Go Matt!!

I read the OP and think: no wonder Paul spends so much time in his workshop/garage!

Anyway, congrats to you BIL for getting his own place, now he can bring girls home! IOW, his problems have just started.

He's had the same girlfriend for most of that time. She used to spend weekends here until she moved into HER own apartment. She lives within walking distance of his new place.

We got him about 90% moved in today.

We now have an empty bedroom in the house (wife is thinking exercise room) and I have not one but TWO empty bays in the garage since I moved all my toys into the new shop and he's not parking here any more.

What's the first thing my darling wife says? "Don't plan on filling that garage back up!"

Methinks she knows me too well...
