Escaped prisoner from Dallas caught sneaking back into prison with snacks, booze, home-cooked food

An inmate from Dallas was busted this week sneaking out of a federal prison in Beaumont to get snacks, alcohol, tobacco and cooked food to take back into the facility.

Sheriff's deputies in Jefferson County learned recently that inmates were going out the back of the prison to neighboring land owned by a rancher and picking up contraband.

Deputies and U.S. marshals were lying in wait around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and watched as someone drove a vehicle onto the property and left a large duffel bag.

At 7:30 p.m., an inmate left the prison grounds and picked up the bag. Deputies arrested the man — identified as Joshua Randall Hansen, 27, of Dallas — as he headed back to the prison.

Guy was serving only 27 months and he couldn't stay out of trouble? Now he can get extra time tacked on.

So the prison has security issues but don't address it. LOL.

27 months (plus a few more for the escape) will seem longer when he's not in the satellite camp anymore and is in a real prison with walls/fences and real inmates.

For good measure, he'll likely lose his good time credit (about 100 days for a two-year sentence) and a halfway house for his last few months is now unlikely.

More than likely he was in the satellite camp. Most jails and prisons have what is called “trustees” but I’ve never been inside a federal prison (I’ve been in county jails and state prisons as a religious volunteer). They are usually the non violent offenders that have good behavior and they do different jobs around the prison. They could do lawn care, deliver mail etc. The trustee camps i’ve seen have no fences and the inmates can leave at any time by walking away. My local county jails use trustees for everything from barbers to mowing and weed trimming around the county. I saw one trustee in a county jail hand making a horse saddle for the sheriff.

We have trustees in this county,they gladly volunteer for this, and get paid a little.
Animal control uses them for dog care,road department uses them to mow highways and litter control
I do not see the harm in working them some.

I'm not sure a jury of his peers will buy charges of "escape" (does something like this even go to trial?). It is more like unauthorized absence and possession of contraband.

Yeah, probably a satellite camp. A good friend of mine ended up in one for insider trading. There were plenty of stories of guys sneaking out at night and heading into Philly for booze and whores and being back by the morning.

It was a serious risk though. Getting caught meant not only more time, but you got put up in the medium security prison across the street. And let me tell you, that place is no fun.
