I have had Directv for 18 years and recently I am not receiving a few channels. A few channels such as AMC suddenly don’t come in and the screen says there is a problem with the satellite signal. I have a tech coming on Monday to look at it. I am tired of paying so much money every month for all these channels when I usually end up watching Netflix. I looked at Directv Now and the channels I like are all available on the cheapest package which is $40 a month. Do you get or can you get a receiver which will also allow you to record shows like the receivers I have now? My main TV is not a smart TV so I am sure I need something to give the signal to the TV but I want to make sure I can record my shows I like. NRA Benefactor Life Member

I'm being lazy here, but it seems there was a thread a few day back about DirectTV. Mostly about problems and also CS. ETA: I might be wrong or I'm thinking of this thread in "What's Your Deal". https://sigforum.com/eve/forums...0601935/m/2750071944

I have DTVN. It is not bad, but needs a consistent internet service. It comes with a DVR service with 20 hours of recording capability. It is worth checking out. You do need a Roku, or AppleTV, or Fire TV to get the DRVN channel. You can also watch it on your phone or PC.

What is the DRVN channel? I don’t know what the Roku, Appletv, or Fire Tv devices do. Do you also need one of those devices with Directv Now or do they just add something more? If they add more, what do they add? I have heard of them; I just have never looked into them. Hulu and Netflix is the most I have added to my tv. NRA Benefactor Life Member

Good live service, clunky dvr. The login credentials do let you access networks directly for more on demand access though. Kinda like having it dvr'd.

I made the switch to Direct TV Now about two months ago because I was tired of having to call AT&T U-verse every year and speak with someone in their retention department. Think of it like Netflix. You will need to buy a streaming stick like a Roku or FireTV and download the DirectTV Now app. You launch the app and you will be able to watch most channels live and access many of their On Demand programs. It is a bit clunky and you can’t 'flip channels' to surf live TV quite as easily. More often then naught I end up launching the guide and scanning until I see something interesting. The one benefit of the service that I see is as a means to determine if you even need TV anymore. My wife and I use it to watch college football but otherwise we haven’t really used it in the last two months (probably because the interface is a bit clunky) so I am beginning to consider cancelling even this service. So you have to have a streaming stick? How does it connect to the tv? I am not sure if my main tv has a USB port. NRA Benefactor Life Member

That's it in a nut shell but the Amazon FireTV cube uses the HDMI port and not the USB port and it looks like the Roku stick also uses the HDMI port as well. Laughing in the face of danger is all well and good until danger laughs back.

What do you use to currently watch Netflix? You will possibly be able to access the DTN app on that. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Some smart TV's have or can load the DTN app so that you do not need a separate streaming device.

A good one for DirectTV Now is the Amazon Fire TV Stick. It requires an HDMI port on your TV. You can catch them on sale. Cutting over to DirectTV Now has saved me $1200 in the last year, I have never looked back to cable TV. "Prepared in mind and resources"

Was it the AMC HD channel and are you getting it now? I ask because that HD channel sent from satellite D14 @ 99°W, or 99°(ca) on the signal strength built into the DirecTV box and yesterday from about 10am to 5pm I was receiving getting the same 771 message on any channel being sent on an even numbered transponder from that satellite. My signal strength on the odd numbered transponders from D14@99°W were all 96 or better while the even number transponders were all 0. This is not a dish alignment or obstruction issue as the signals were great on half the transponders from that satellite. I called DirecTV and "Freddie" said it wasn't a problem on their end. That it fixed itself for me and others had the same issue leads me to believe "Freddie" was misinformed. I'll be moving in the next few weeks to an area with much faster internet and will be seriously considering DirecTV Now. I only get 8mbs max from the only internet provider available at the current house.

We have been on Directv now for about three months. Useing an Amazon fire stick. you can not use a 1st generation fire stick, they removed that capability with an upgrade sometime earlier this year. We have had good service. Good quality picture. One plus is that we receive the major network local channels (abc, nbc, cbs,Fox). But no PBS is available on directv now anywhere. We have multiple tv’s in our house and they all have a fire stick. It is convenient to have the same interface on all tv’s vs using different smart tv interfaces.

I've had it since they first launched. I get it through my Amazon Fire but I got the cube and not the stick. I hear the cube has a better processor and you get a better streaming experience. Because I got in on their introductory offer I pay $37 a month for the Go Big package which I think now is like $70 a month. It has DVR capability but I rarely use it. I've been very pleased with it. Between that and what Amazon offers I have access to way more than I will ever need or want. I have a separate antenna for OTA. It does buffer at times and have had the app just crash now and again but it's not a major issue. But I'm not a big tv watcher it's usually on for just background noise. We were paying over $200 a month for internet and cable. Now we are at about $125 for the two. "Fixed fortifications are monuments to mans stupidity" - George S. Patton

Yes AMC is one of the channels, but it still doesn’t work. It has been this way for a couple weeks. Gonna have to watch Walking Dead on the iPad again tonight. My helpful Directv person kept saying it was the receiver since I have had it for a long time and I needed to upgrade all of my equipment. I don’t want a new contract and was being tricky trying to make it sound like you don’t get pulled into a new contract. He also didn’t listen when I told him each TV in the house has a receiver and all are not getting the exact same channels so the problem is something before the receiver at the tv. Ya, the CS people are not good listeners. Chances are it's your LNB which is the thing at the end of the arm attached to your dish that picks up the signals after they are reflected off the dish.
