I saw a report the firefighters are pulling out to form a defensive perimeter, and that circa noon PDT the navy is going to activate the shipboard foam system. That's not good news as it indicated the main hanger or the vehicle stowage areas are involved.

From the dense black and grey smoke I'd say if the Navy saves her, it will be a huge job to fix her.

That is going to be expensive.

Lots of construction gear / CONEX boxes on the flight deck. Likely undergoing some MX and something obviously didn't get put away properly.

Don't those ships have NBC decon systems? Turn those puppies on and douse the whole ship with tons of seawater.

Of course, I'm sure they already thought of that.

I also figured she was undergoing major maintenance. I bet a lot of brass are already trying to pin this on contractors and not on Navy personnel. . .

Yes they do, BUT, Depending on the type of fire that may only make it worse. Water on a Class Bravo fire will spread the fire. The system itself is on the weather and hangar decks so it wouldnt help much if the fire is below decks
Not to mention they have to pump off the water they put inside her.

Fire continues unabated and has spread significantly forward.

Onboard crews ordered ashore, then the pier was ordered cleared of personnel.

At one point the firefighting tugs pulled back, but they seem to have come back to spray seawater on a hull so hot it it flashes to steam.

Right now it looks like the Navy is going to contain its losses and let the ship burn itself out.

$2B+ and five years to build a replacement.

Update from Monday, July 13th
The smell at my house (10 miles Northwest from the Bay) is like burning rubber or wire insulation and oil. The entire City from my point of view has a greyish low level cloud cover. If this was June, the locals call it June Gloom but it definitely isn't that especially with the smell mixed in.

The Navy began water drops via helicopter on Monday, I believe the first drop can be seen at starting at 10:26:26am. It is very difficult to follow the helicopters, they appear in the screen flying from left to right, drop from aft to bow then exit from right to left. It is easier to view on YouTube with the screen enlarged.

The smoke makes locating the air drops very difficult to follow and I guessing on the direction based on navigation and landing lights. As the wind direction and smoke changes, I expect the air drops will change.

Wow. Hope those guys come out OK. Instead of detailing injuries everybody uses the term non life threatening which means nothing.

The shipyard here could always use the business, we fixed the Fitzgerald.

Ingalls Pascagoula? Both were built there I believe. (old name I know, I was at Avondale in the 90s)

I doubt they'd spend the time and money to tow her that far. The San Diego shipyard is 2 piers north of her. But who knows, it is the .gov

Yep Ingalls. They will argue they built her. The work on the Fitz included LOTS of uppgrades to the weapons system. Mississippi does not have the pull in Congress we once did with Trent Lott, Gene Taylor and Thad Cochran who headed up the Apporpriations Committee. Before those guys we had John Stennis. Who knows what will happen really.

Isn’t that the same one that was in that SEAL movie?

She's on her maintenance availablity, ironically, Fitzgerald was tied-up across the pier before being moved. NASSCO nearby I think was doing the yard work, could be BAE...she's tied up at a Navy pier so, not sure how civ maintenance works once the ship is moved.

Hopefully this isn't a USS Miami situation.

Update: Admiral at press conference says fire was sourced in lower vehicle space, forward. Has been classified as a Class A fire.

Class a fire? That’s an odd one on a ship.

I don't know anything about military ships, but will that intense heat weaken the steel too much?

Will the ship turn into basically what amounts to scrap metal?

Or can it be put back in service?

EDIT, I was just talking to an old friend who was stationed on the USS Bonhommme around 1960-ish as an electronics tech for the planes. He says it was an aircraft carrier. Turns out that is a different ship, it was scrapped years ago. This one in San Diego is a newer and different ship, with the same name.

Yes the heat will change the temper of the metal, but as with all things with the right amount of money anything can be fixed
