I concede that Denton is not as small as when I grew up here, but we still have a week-long fair and rodeo. My sister has the best party every year. She lives in the same house we grew up in. The fair parade passes by her house both coming and going. We go get breakfast tacos and donuts, then everybody brings lawn chairs and we sit in the street at the curb and drink a bloody mary or mimosa while the kids fill up bags of thrown candy and loot. Best part is always the Mexican cowboys on their Andalusian and Freisan high stepping prancing horses. Their beautiful silver saddles probably cost a year of my salary. it is a really fun morning.

Sounds great Melissa! My little hometown in Missouri had “Puddle Jumper Days”. I was in the school band which was an important part of the parade. Floats and horse riders too.

I have pics from last year, but I haven’t figured out the picture posting. I forgot my phone in the house this year.

“ Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one’s own understanding without another’s guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one’s own mind without another’s guidance.”

Make sure the band marches before the horses do.

Sadly, the school bands don’t participate any more. Up until last year, trustys at the county jail walked behind the parade and scooped up horse poop, striped jail uniforms and all. It was a volunteer day. Lots of them did it to get the day out walking in the sun. Now they are using a street sweeper.

My town’s Pioneer Days Festival is this weekend.
I took the kids every year when they were younger.
I’m staying home this year because
1. I’d be by myself.
B. It was still over 100 degrees as the sun went down.

MelissaDallas, I miss those days.

Here lined up for the Independence Day parade in small town upstate NY in 2005. Made the trip from South Dakota back home and enjoyed it immensely.
